today i hit a rock right my front differential. It was hard enough to take a chunk out of the rock but did not physically damage (as far as i could see) the differential itself. Any potential problems that can come from this?

Yes. The rock is probably ruined for life.

Seriously...

The bottom part of your diff is super stout. It's the face of the diff that is pretty thin and subject to damage. You probably did not do any damage to the diff.

Thanks,
Mike B.

my thoughts are that if you did any damage to your diff you would absolutly know it by now.

Fluid pouring out on ground, hole in the diff, bits of gears on the ground, all these things are bad, otherwise your probably okay. Get diff gaurds if your going to be running into rocks with the diff.

Hypothetically, what would you have to do to fix a hole in the diff? Is it possible to weld?

Yes, it's possible to weld up good as new, the face is VERY thin, but the last place you want to put a hole in it is out on a trail. At least a front diff guard should be everyones first off-road acessory. Cheap insurance.

you might have broken the seal - watch for gear oil seepage around the circumference of the diff

park in a place where the water does not run off easily, wait for a while, look for the telltale rainbow of color that indicates oil on water.

The seal can be replaced. A hard whack can destroy the seal, but not really damage anything. Clean up the diff and check it in the morning after it's dry. Drop some cardboard under the diff overnight. Lots of ways to check for leaks, even when it's wet out. If you are leaking, you should be fine, but make sure you don't run dry. You'll see obvious evidence if you leak out 2 quarts of gear oil :-)
