Just bought a 95 Disco, so I'm new to the intracacies of these vehicles (though I now beware the power of Lucas...). Auto tranny, appears to work fine but there is a lot of heat radiating up the gear selector. The gear indicator on the right side (which is lit) also becomes hot. The gear indicator on the left side doesn't get that warm. Anyways, is this normal? Anything I should inspect (tranny oil cooler or ???). Thanks in advance! |

You have an 'overheat' sensor in the trans cooler lines, near the radiator. Worry only when it activates the instrument lamp; apart from that: 'they all do that.' Since you're new to the vehicle, when was the last time the trans fluid was changed ? Get ahold of a factory service manual so you can keep on top of it. You do not want brit engr'ng to get away from you in terms of deferred maintenance. |

Yup...my 95 does that, too. Esp. in the summer. You can't wrap your fingers around it w/o fear of getting burned. Enjoy your Disco |

Here in Saudi with 120F summers the tunnel gets warm, and the lever (5speed), but never THAT hot. We have coolers on the 5 speed here though. Check the oil spec going into it - R380 spec was changed to MTF94 from Caltex somewhere along the way - from ATF. jp |
