I had sirius installed in my 98 LSE, now after alarm is set about 10 min later alarm goes off. I tried to use the cd changer the other day and when I switch the head unit to cd it reads "error". Did the installer short something out? I haven't had a chance to tinker with it yet and/or take it back to the installer.

I can't answer your question, but I've recently been looking at upgrading my sound system to XM or Sirius. Did you replace the head unit or use the factory and add the module?
Also, what are the differences in the stereo of the LSE and LE in 98? I've got the LE.

Something tells me the installer broke into the vehicles wiring for power on the alarm circuit rather than going to the fuse box.
The cd error is more puzzling. The answer may lie in how they tied the sirius' audio output into the stock stereo. Is the changer getting power? Remove the magazine and reinstall and see if it cycles through the cd's.

Man, let me know what they did. I have a sirius in the box, waiting to install. I don't want to screw it up.

I have the Kenwood RF modulator and sat tuner, it was on sale, it works awesome, I travel alot and it's worth having to be able to listen to one station for more than 30 miles! My wife wants one in her car. But I knew I should have installed it myself, I got bad mojo or something when I have other people work on my stuff.... I'm not sure what, if any differs between the head unit in the LE and LSE, it's hard to find any info on the head units, my brother has a 97 SE7 and I could of sworn it was the same head unit, I'll have to give him a call...... Looks like the cd changer has power, cause it does cycle through the cd's when the cartridge is removed. I think your right, I don't see anything different in the fuse box and they had solder all over the place, they must have soldered right on to the back of the head unit.....hopefully I'll have more time to look at it this weekend or take it back the installer. Thanks for the responses, I'll keep you posted.

Rob:
Does the factory CD changer have a "reset" button (1/8-inch diameter that has to be pushed with a ball-point pen tip, usually below the magazine inside the door where you insert the magazine) that has to be pushed when the power has been disconnected (if the installer disconnected the battery)? My aftermarket changer does. Maybe that's the CD problem.

I also have the Kenwood modulator and tuner, feeding into the antenna lead to the factory head unit, and agree with your evaluation of the system's wonderfulness. I got power on our 95 by tapping into the wiring harness coming out of the back of the head unit. Look in the electrical manual for colors. On the 95, it was purple for battery on all the time, and light green and orange for ignition-switched 12 volts. No alarm problems (thank goodness!), and we enjoy the heck out of the unit, since we live in the middle of nowhere with no good normal FM reception. Good luck sorting out your problems.

Rob,
Please keep me posted. I'm holding off 'till I find out what they did to yours. Hope to get it fixed soon.

I took a quick look at it, they soldered to the purple and to the light green and orange, but also to the black (ground hopefully), I thought they would just ground to the chassis somewhere, maybe that's my problem with the alarm? There was a reset button on the cd changer, tried it with the key on, key off, etc....it does go through a reset but doesn't fix the "ERR" on the head unit when you set it to cd......I don't see anything else that would be shorting out....looks like someone tried to tap on to the black wire coming off the middle connector, I don't have a wiring diagram so I'm not sure what that one is...maybe it's broken. Guess I'll have to break down and get a manual, is the haynes worth getting or should I pay the big money and get the shop manual? Thanks, Rob

Rob:
Yes, the black is ground; I agree they could have just used a chassis ground somewhere (which I did), but can't see why tapping into the black lead off the head unit would cause an alarm problem. I can't remember what the "middle connector" that you refer to goes to, and the factory electrical troubleshooting manual does not show a view of the back of the radio to tell where it goes. As I recall, one went to the amp, and the other may goe to the CD. As for getting a manual, I've never seen the inside of a Haynes to know what it will do for you electrical-wise. I have the genuine shop manual (which has no real electrical diagrams) and the separate genuine electrical troubleshooting manual. The electrical manual has some good troubleshooting info in some sections, and is very complete as far as schematic diagrams and locations of connectors and components, but in general I find it awkward to use. Sorry to hear that the CD reset wasn't the cure of the CD problems. I think maybe it's time to take the truck back to the installer and have a long heart-to-heart talk with their manager. Good luck, and keep us posted on what you find.
John
