Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this or has a useful suggestion ...

During the rainy season here in the DC area my '02 Disco has started to show a water stain on the headliner just above the pillar b/w the windshield and driver's side door. The dealer dismissively diagnosed the problem as a windshield seal issue, subcontractor "fixed" it yesterday under warranty. This morning, after a night of rain, the spot is wet again.

Any other culprits come to mind? Should I expect the dealer to deconstruct the interior/headliner looking for the leak?

Yep, I do have sunroofs. The spot seemed far from the sunroof, but maybe that's a settling point for a leak on that side of the sunroof?

Under the sunroof there is a pan which drains off water into a tube/s down the A pillars. The tubes can get blocked and as a result the water will overflow from the pan onto the headlining, and can appear as though it is from the windscreen. Sometimes, though rarely, the pan under the sunroof can get loose on one side with the same result.
To test if the drain is blocked, open the sunroof and pour water into the drain. If it overflows quickly, your drain holes are blocked. You could try to unblock these with a thin piece of wire.

If you don't have a blocked drain, then you could have a dropped pan and you will have to pull down the headliner to fix it.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks, Roland, for the valuable insight ... I'll give it a try this evening and report back!
