Just did them on my d1, after 96k miles on the stock woodheads.

damn, I had no idea what I was missing...I kinda feel like im driving a BMW...oh wait, am i?

the install went pretty well, besides the stock rover jack pissing fluid all over and slowly lowering the trcuk to the jackstand. and getting at the front lower shock mount bolt ( what a friggin PITA) it went well

thanks to all who recomended the shocks, they are great

Did you keep your stock springs?

I'm doing mine this weekend. I have 93k and we bought with 50k. I just reviewed my service records and the local shop recommended new shocks after the 52.5k service. I've procrastinated a little. I can't wait to see the difference.

Alan

well, I still have the stock springs ( 30k miles on them) but upgraded to OME HD springs a few years ago. The stockers are in a box in teh basement

I really like the OME HD with Bilstien shocks setup, makes a big difference in the ride from the stock setup!

Greg, which Bilsteins did you use on the front and back? I need to do mine soon. Also, did you get any additional lift over the stock shocks? Thanks.

I'm considering changing mine soon as well. Any major diferrence between the OME and Bilstein's? Also how much lift do you get out of them over stock?

I think lift comes from springs, not shocks. Of course, I don't have new springs or shocks so I could be totally off but I remember asking the exact same question and the general answer was that lift comes from springs.

Thanks Alan- I heard you should change the shocks and springs at the same time. Can I afford to hang on to my stock springs and just change the shocks or better to change the whole set at once? 96' with 79K miles.

It really comes down to what your requirements are. I'm guessing if you want to change springs, you're going to a HD setup right? If you think you need to go to a HD setup, then you might as well do both shocks and springs together because the front shocks sit inside the spring so do them together to minimize labor. The rear setup is separate. But if you're vehicle is driven mostly on the road and you want to retain the softer ride, then just do the shocks and leave the springs until you really need to have them done. There's a lot of folks on here who have just done the shocks and left the stock springs in because they drive on pavement so much. The guys who have gone to the full switch are typically guys who go off-road a fair amount and have some heavier equipment like winches and bull bars that actually require the HD springs. It's really a judgement call on your part.

The benefits of doing them together is that you're proabably going to get a better price on springs and shocks that are sold as kits, they're done at the same time so you know when they were done and their life expectancy, and you're done with it instead of having to do the springs at a later time. The con is that you may not really need the HD springs and end up with a harsher ride than you really want.

Yeh

what alan said...he makes some great points regarding "need"

and
Just for the record, like I said , I had no money to upgrade the shocks whhen I went with the larger springs.(OME HD) The springs are what give you the lift..Infact the shocks work just the opposite of the lift, and work against it. not lowering the springs, but definetly dont give you any lift. I wanted the lift of the HD springs and needed the HD part, for a winch set up that I had on there. I just did the billstines ( all 5 shocks for under 400 bucks shipped from RN) and its been a week, and they are incredible.

either way, when you upgrade your springs you will notice a difference in driving and handleing...but when you fit the new shocks, you will get rid of the horrible disco body roll and feel more like you are driving something with touring suspension.

bottom line, is its better to do it in parts, so you can afford it, than not do it at all.

sorry for the late response, been out and about. Anyway, I got my shocks at roverconnection.com. Only took about 4 days to get, got them for both front and rear and have been very happy with them.
