Some of you know the alternator issues on my 95 Disco. Just got a new one yesterday and will install it later today. I know the top nut is for the battery, the middle nut is for that nut that comes attached to the wire. The bottom nut on my old alternator had a piece of metal where I just plugged in the smallest wire. This new one does not have it. Can I plug that small wire into that plug just to below and to the right of it? Or can I buy the piece at a parts store? What is this bottom one for? I have posted a pic for reference. |

That smallest wire should be your tachometer, and I would only plug it back onto wherever you unplugged it from. Remove the spade connector from your old alternator and put it onto the new one. Jim |

I dont have that spade connector. You think a parts store would have one? |

You didn't turn in your core before installing the new one did you? oooh, you better have kept the front pulley or yer gonna be sorry! Just cut the old female spade connector off and put on an eyelet connector and drive on. The objective is to get the wire attached to the alternator - doesn't matter how you accomplish it (within the bounds of sanity and reason of course). Jim |

Alright here is the deal. After replacing the spade with a new eyelet, I installed the new(not rebuilt) alternator and new battery just in case. It cranked up fine. The real test will be later today or tommorrow. Hopefully It wont be dead again. Keep your fingers crossed. Any thoughts on cuplrits if I am dead and wont start in a few hours? A ground problem? Guess I am putting the cart before the horse. |

Ok before I started it and drove it home, I touched the alternator and it was super hot to the touch. I drove it 3 miles home because I wanted it home instead of at my office. Once home, I left the truck running to see if I heard or saw anything unusual. It was still super hot to the touch and could see some sparking inside as it ran. Think alternator#2 is also toast even though its new. Help!!!!!! |

I don't know, it's June outside so after I drive it around the block I need to wear gloves to open the hood. EVERYTHING's hot. Put a voltmeter on the battery terminals. Should read 12/13 volts when off and 14/15 volts when running. If it reads good you're golden. JH |
