I owned a land rover Discovery 1996, automatic 4-gear, 300TDi engine for about 6 months. I notice that whenever shift gear between :D; (Drive) and :R; (Reverse), a loud clunk noise is heard. Is this normal for all automatic gear Discovery? If not what could be the problem?

Thanks Blake I am asking this question because I was asked repeatedly by my passengers (all of them are non-Land Rover owner.) that why the clunk is so loud. At least I feel better after your answer.

Check the A frame ball joint this is the most common cause for drive-line clonks. They are normally stuffed at 80 000 Km (50k miles). They are about $60 Australian. Lever off the diff housing with a crow bar and look for the smallest amount of play. You can't normally fell the play if you remove it from the car unless it is really bad. |
