I have some major work to be done on my Disco I. Fortunately, I have an extended warranty. The warranty co will pay MSRP price (about $850.00)for the parts needed for the job. They get the MSRP price from Forte. The beef is my local LR dealer wants and additional $600 from me because they say their price is higher than what the warranty co will pay. I matched up some of the parts at Rovers North and the warranty co price more than covered it. I really like the people at the LR dealer and have been pleased with the work they did in the past. Is this common practice or am I getting raped? Thats about an additional 100% markup!

BTW, there is $2000 worth of labor involved and the warranty co pays all of that.

Tell the dealer to either match the costs of parts to what the warrenty will pay or order the parts from Rovers North. Let them know that you like there work, but you are not going to be over charged for parts...

I just bought some things at the dealer and paid the same price as I could have gotten online w/ shipping. Dealer took a $20 loss on one part alone.

All you can do is ask.

Can you tell I am cheap :-)

I talked to someone who used to work at a LR dealership about this. Apparently LRNA allows dealers to charge whatever they want for parts. Last week my friend in CA paid $400 for a 3rd member and in Florida, it's only $350.00

Thanks,
Mike B.

According to Land Rover, dealers are only able to use new, genuine parts purchased through LRNA. Consequently, your dealer is contractually prohibited from buying parts from other sources.

Since Ford has taken control, they have aggressively pursued infringements on the name and aftermarket parts outlets.

Here's what a parts mgr. explained to me; I was expecting to pay more for the service manual set, electrical library and wiring diagrams. I said thats about 50 bucks cheaper than I expected, why so cheap? He said they go by zip code. They take suggested list and add or subtract a percentage depending on where you live. This was Prestige LR in New Jersey, just across the river from Manhatten. They said since my area was a depressed area, my cost on anything there was based on that. Give them a Manhatten zip code, you'll be paying a lot more. For the hell of it we changed the zip in the computer to a New York city one. Price for everthing needed for a valve job went from my cost of about 700.00 to 1,200. Prices there are fixed on your ability to pay.

Thanks, Paul.

That looks like what's happening to me here. I need a new head gasket and steering box. The MSRP for the parts is $850 and the dealer price is $1,450. I didn't know Charlotte was such a hot area! Did you find out if the dealers in the depressed areas pay less for the parts? Or the "rich" area dealers just make more money?

". I need a new head gasket and steering box. The MSRP for the parts is $850 and the dealer price is $1,450"

That is outrageous! You can try to get them to use a reman box rather than new to save some cash(technically you are supposed to use reman on a warranty claim, but they may be quoting you QAF000150 which is new)

STC8684E (reman box) is about $270 retail
To do even BOTH heads it is at most $500 for parts.
