Recently there was a tick tick noise under acceleration, turned out to be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket which was replaced (both sides). Car has been fine for 1500 miles until today, on acceleration there is quite a loud clatter coming from the one bank. Loud enough to turn heads as you drive down the road. Revving the car in neutral there is what sounds like a popping/clunking noise on deceleration. (could this be backfire?) What is going on here, could this be the gasket again, could it be a valve problem? What are the implications of driving the car with a bad exhaust manifold leak (if that's what the problem is). The car will be taken to the dealer in the morning but just wanted to get my facts right. Thanks |

One of the exhaust manifolds may have cracked. |

P.S. I wouldnt worry about it causing any other problems though. |

Handed car to dealer today. He confirmed an exhaust manifold leak, has no explaination as to why there should be another leak so soon after the first one. He says it is so bad that you can feel it with your hand. I wonder what else they will find. This is getting tedious, on average 3 visits to the dealership for major problems excluding regular service intervals and the car only has 30000km on the clock. www.worst4x4.freeservers.com |

that should not be too pricey though. a fairly easy fix as long as there are no issues with taking the old bolts off. in one case it was that the manifold was just loose. i have replaced most of my gaskets at 71K......collector gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. it is pretty embarassing driving with a badly leaking one. when my right side collector went i sounded like a chinook helicopter landing. |

Hi GP. Yes that is exactly what the sound was. The car is sold here with a 3 year garantee so there will be no cost. They found a hairline crack in one of the manifold studs, replaced this and the gasket. |

The manifold gasket has gone on one side of my V8 - it doesn't look that difficult to replace - anything that could catch me out? My local dealership wants £110 to do this + £12 for the gasket. It looks like a 15 min job to me (providing the bolts come out !) - am I missing something ?? Thanks Matt |

joel, "3 visits to the dealership for major problems" While I sympathize with you, I would hardly call leaking exhaust gaskets major. I have had much worse and consider it normal... Curtis |

providing the bolts come out ! That is the key And they do not break. Also the manifolds have a tendency to warp so refitting is not always strait forward. Ron |

Hi Curtis. In a car with only 30000km on the clock, two exhaust manifold failures in one month IS major. In fact any failure that renders the car unsafe to drive (as defined by the dealership)is major. Specially when you couple this with, brake failure two times, steering problems 3 times, water leaking from below the throttle body 2 times, warning lights continuously illuminating for no reason, broken engine mounting, stretched bonnet (hood)cable and all the rest that I am sure you have read on the web site. Each time these faults occur be they considered major or minor we are without the car for at least 2 days and have to find alternate means of transport. It's amazing how defensive LR owners become when they hear of other's faults/complaints about the brand. It does not mean that you made a mistake with your purchase it means that I am having trouble with mine, that's all. At the appropriate time we will get rid of the piece of scrap. Unfortunately it will then become someone else's problem. www.worst4x4.freeservers.com |

So, is there any trick to getting the bolts out (and not breaking them) ? Should I warm the engine slightly to get them out, or try it cold ? I know that if some @rse has done up the wheel bolts with an air wrench, then it can be easier to get them out when the hubs are warm. Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated -I ain't paying my dealer £122 per side (I might as well do both sides whilst I'm at it !!) Ta Matt. |

Matt - warming the engine will make it much easier. Joel, You said: "It's amazing how defensive LR owners become when they hear of other's faults/complaints about the brand. I have had much worse and consider it normal..." I would not call the statement above defensive. I was simply trying to provide you with some scale. A "major" problem is one that leaves your rig disabled. Like having your SLS go out on a trail at Moab and having to have the rig towed back to Salk Lake City...or having a rear diff blow on a trail and being unable to move due to no CDL. Another tow incedent. What about after your rig is towed in from Moab and they discover that they must replace the short block? I had all of the above happen to my rover in the first six months. Big deal. You fix it and move on. I have also had "major" problems with Toyota, Mercedes, Fords, and GM products. If I were to go out and start blackballing every make I had trouble with I would have a hard time finding a vehicle. I am truly sorry that you are having a bad experience. That is just the way it goes sometimes though. At least you were able to drive to a dealer who is trying to get the problem fixed... Curtis |
