Hello all. Today as I was driving home, I noticed the battery light come on and the tach stopped working. I turned off my lights, radio, a/c, and after a couple minutes, the battery light went off. But the tach still read nothing. I assume I need an alternator. Can someone tell me which brand to get and where I can get one for a good price? Can I get one from the local Advanced auto or pep boys? Thanks for any help.

Yup Alternator is gonzo. You are pretty much stuck with the same brand unless you go for mean green or similar. You don't say what year/model you have. D1's had Magnetti Marelli, most of the D2 have Bosch. Now its up to you whether to go for a rebuilt or brand new unit. Sources for rebuilds include http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com/489/cat489.htm?221 great 3 year warranty! New: Www.roverparts.com Mean Green www.4x4connection.com

Red Light It may not be your Alternator,I'm having mine looked at now. They tell me my red light problem is not to do with the Alternator. I understand there are many other gadgets in there to foul up the works. My red battery light stays on after I have turned of my engine. I had to disconnect my battery to get it to go out. I noticed the battery light had a very low glow on my way to work and by the time I arrived it seemed to have no glow at all. After work I had a slow drive home 60 kilometres ph because my engine (3.5 v8) would not run at speed. If I got a little speed up the engine would lose power in a jerking fashion and then run smooth and then lose power again. I arrived home turned of the key and the red light she came on and she stays on. The engine normally runs smooth. Noel |

Chris, I checked out Auto Zone for their alternators and they have a Delco one for sale. Do you know if these are rebuilt? |

Get a Bosch rebuilt. Comes with a 2 year warranty. Unless you run added load like extra lights and winch in which case a MG might be worth the investment. As far as Noel's post I've been under the impression that dead tach always meant bad alt (excepting a bad tach unit) |

I just checked www.importeccatalog.com and they have one for $193. Its a Bosch. How long can I expect one of these to last (the bosch), model AMR 3107, the same as Atlantic British sells for $400? Has anyone tried these, and if so, are they a direct replacement? |

Bill, did you get the Alternator checked at Auto Zone, if you didn't they do it for free. It might not be that Alternator after all, I would check it just to be sure. |
