It's a 1 owner that has been used to travel to and from work. It has 85k miles. It's a 5spd with cloth int, and no sunroofs.
It has been serviced at the dealership since new. He just had the head gasket replaced.
The truck drives super tight. It feels and sounds like a new one.
The L rear window sticks.
I am paying $7,500 for it. What advise can you guys give me.

Thanks
Doug

did you run a carfax? if not let me know the VIN number and i can run it for free for you. i paid the $20 to CARFAX and it lets me run an unlimited number of vin's for 1 month. so if you haven't done it, i can save you the cash and tell you what it says. but it's a good idea to check into it and make sure he didn't wreck it and get it rebuilt.

also if he doesn't have copies of the records see if you can get them from the LR dealer.

i just bought my 1st rover so over the last few weeks i've gotten well aquainted with all the steps involved in the hunt for a decent rover.

I have a 96 SD 5 speed with 184k miles original owner. The only major problem I've had was when my t-case ran out of fluid on the interstate and bombed.$$$$ I love my truck and 5speeds are kind of rare.
I would buy another 96.

Doug,
I also drive a 96 SD 5 speed. Now with 94,000 miles. I've definately put it through its paces, with everything from coast to coast interstate trips to extended, fully loaded, offroad trips. I have broken the truck, but it has never broken on me. I would think that a properly serviced SDwould be a reasonable bet. A couple of things I would inquire about are:
1) Swivel ball lubrication. 96's still had oil in the front hubs, but most were upgraded to grease in '97 - '98. Not sure which is really better, but you should know what you have.
2) Rear drive shafts. '96 was the last year of the roto-flex coupling vs. a U-joint in the rear. Again, many of these were replaced under warranty in 97-98, but you should know. I had a roto until I lifted my truck beyond its limits. Roto's work pretty well, but if you lift your truck, you will have to deal with it degrading faster.
3) There is also an upgraded "water ingress kit" to attempt to keep your ECU dry. It never happened to me, but without it, you can leak water around the hood into the ECU.

Enjoy
Mark

I also have a 96 SD and can say that it has run great. Let me be very honest with you in saying that you MUST have maintenance records. 96-97 are the lowest quality builds in Discovery's short history so be very thorough with the maintenance issue. Electrical issues have been the only hassle for me. DII's were switched to Bosch electrics so they are more reliable in that area, but for that price and with records it sounds like a deal. With the economy low cars are priced low too so now is the time to buy. I bought mine in May of 02 with 62k miles for $14k. Prices have dropped a LOT. I say go for it if they can produce maintenance records. The window is an easy fix.
