Anyone have any tips on installing an oil pressure gauge- specifically the connection to the oil pump?

I read Perrone Ford's article on spanishtrailrovers.com, but the pic of where the NPT fitting goes weren't real clear. Also his was on a Range Rover - (maybe it's the same).

Also Autometer does not mention that the oil needs to be drained as they do with the coolant - does it?
Any pics or tips would be appreciated

Sorry you couldn't decipher my page. I really do need to improve the pics there.

On the oil pump (RRC, D1, D90 are the same) has several "plugs" on it. These are simply threaded plugs. I borrowed a spare, had it drilled and tapped, and installed it.

The oil doesn't need to be drained because the oil pump is higher than the pan.

Hopefully this helps some... I may look into taking a better pic of the install.

I have not tried it yet but a friend of mine that is a volkswagen mechanic gave me a vdo sending unit that has two output terminals on it, one for a guage and one for the stock idiot light. If it works, it will be alot easier install, just unthread the old sending unit and put this one in.

Thanks Perrone -

Do you mean you had an extra plug "drilled and tapped" - what exactly needs to be done? Was this so you could install the tubing and then thread it back in easier? Is the setup mentioned to use the existing warning light tap a better way to go?

Excuse my ignorance - I'm more proficient with the electrical stuff...

My gauge is mechanical. So I needed to drill and tap the blanking plug to screw in the pressure tubing fitting. This install does NOT interfere with the stock gauge whatsoever. All told, it took about 45 minutes from start to finish.

As far as "what I did exactly" was to drill a hole in the blanking plug. And have it "tapped" which means to add threads. That's the sum total of what was necessary to modify on the truck.

I didn't want an electrical gauge because I don't trust them. Look at the sheer number of issues on this board or any LR board and note how many are electrical issues. I wanted simplicity and reliability and that's what I got.

Best of luck with your install.

Did you say Volkswagon, Jeff?

When I had an aftermarket stereo installed they used a Volkswagon wiring adaptor. The one and only difference was that the two power wires (clock and stereo) were reversed.

I wonder what else is compatible between these two vehicles?
