So my mechanic says the ECU is fried in my 98 Disco because water got on it. I was kind of surprised to hear the whole ECU was bad, thought it was just a relay causing my fuel problems.

When replacing the ECU do I need to reprogram anything to my vehicle? Also what should a used one run me?

Thanks Evan

Before investing in a new ECU, check out the EPA's emission warranty in the tech section of this site. I have a 98 and was having intermittent stalling and was told by the dealer I needed a new ECU. I mentioned the EPA warranty and the dealership checked it out and replaced mine at no cost, not even labor! There are certain criteria you have to meet so check it out.

Otherwise, it will cost you your pride and it will humble you to buy a new ECU. You'll probably also have to pull your pants down and bend-over. Whether or not the installing agency uses swivel grease or not will depend on whether you will be able to walk out of there or will have to waddle.

By the way, ECUs are expensive, and not easy to access for replacement.

That JB is NOT by me , JB from Alabama. Is there a way I can access this person's IP address and resolve it with him/her personally ??

TIA,

JB from Alabama .

are you sure the whole damn thing is fried, or was it just a little wet and can be cured by a little drying?

J&B for me....

If the ECU is truly fried, try a salvage yard, or better yet, check the message boards for somebody parting out a wreck. Is '98 a GEMS ECU?

John e-mail me about what your asking for the ECU,

My e-mail is [email protected]
just remove the nospam part.

It appears that the ECU is truly fried. It is dry now and things are still not working.

My disco is an LSE, are the ECUs for all 98 discos the same?

Thank You,

Evan

Their were some emission changes made in some 98 models. The unit I have is a GEM ecu, but all 98's should be also. Give me your VIN no and I can make sure if this unit will work with your truck.
