A friend asked me to post this for him...

"Legroom question?
Looking at buying a used Discovery (1999-2001 models). I am 6'2" with long legs. When I test rode, I found that I just couldn't get the seat to go back or down enough to feel comfortable driving. Even with the Steering wheel pushed up all the way, I felt that when I picked up my foot from the gas to press on the brake pad, that my knee was tight under the steering wheel. I was surprised at a truck with such headroom was restrictive on my leg area. Dealership said that they could only move the seat back on the track an additional 3/4 of an inch and there was nothing they could do with the steering wheel.
I Really like the vechicle, but don't want to be uncomfortable driving it..... if I could only get a couple more inches backwards or lower the seat a bit more, or raise the wheel more....
Anyone have any ideas? Can the seat be unbolted and moved back????

Thanks in advance. I will be watching the responses.....

Thanks all

Read the archives...or the tech section.

I'm 6'2" and have reasonably long legs, and with the chair all the way back and up I'm quite comfortable. I know others who have moved the chair back and that helped a lot too...

It's possible, but the fact remains this is a truck, not a car, and it isn't quite the same seating position -- MUCH more upright than other SUV's.

I'm 6'4" with 37" inseam and I find the DII cramped compared to DI. If the seat can be moved back, that would definitely help. The steering wheel is more in the way on the D2 and you can't do much about that other than replacing it with a smaller wheel. Thanks to the SRS, that may not be that easy, legal-wise. I think that more legroom for rear passengers was created by moving the front seat forward. If I'm to drive a truck I wxpect to be more comfortable than in a car. Not so with a D2, I guess. Still I'd take that over any car and if I can handle the lack of room, I'm sure your friend can too.

I am 6'6" and love the upright seating position, but agree the ratio of headroom to legrom is way outta whack. I am the one who did the "increase legroom" in the tech section. Although mine is a D1 with non-power seats, I'd have figured out a way to do it with the power ones, even if it took a hacksaw and JB Weld, but luckily on mine it was easy. I hate that feeling that a little fender-bender would send my kneecap a foot deep into the dash.

If you are creative do the first thing I always do, take everything apart. Then improvise.

6'4", 250 lbs here and my D2 has sufficient leg room for me. Yes, I have the seat all the way back. :-)

Paul,

The D2 may have been good but how about the cockpit of the Osprey? Out of curiosity, how does that compare?

I only ask because I took an incentive flight in a twin seater F-16 once and found it quite cramped. Compared to you guys, I am quite Napoleonic at a meager 6'1". Are there height limits on some of those military aircraft?

Alan, the taller they are, the tougher it is to get down and play with the Pugs. :-) Don't worry, be happy....

And to put this back on topic, David and I both wish there was more leg room in our DII. We've gotten used to it, but it would be nice to have a little more front-to-back room. The headroom is wonderful for tall guys like David. He'd never have made it in the 4Runner I test-drove before I sold him on the Disco.

hey randall,

i am a tiny 6'00" but with long legs and i wish there was a bit more leg room as well...i always knew how to adjust the seat in almost any car...all the way back. but, all the way back in my DII just does not quite get it. my dealership told me that they have "customized" a few DII's for dallas mavericks basketball players, but the price was something nuts (like $500) to just achieve an inch or so...the DI looks to be pretty easy to adjust back, but not DII's. i will join in with the "i just got used to it" crowd. but i still try every combination under the sun from time to time hoping to hit somewhere more ergo...

Steve asks, "The D2 may have been good but how about the cockpit of the Osprey?"

Well Steve; the cockpit of the V-22 is harder to get into, however once you are in, you have plenty of room. I just recently got to play with a brand new F-15E and I know what you mean about being cramped. Back end of that thing (WSO Seat) is very limited for real estate.

Getting back to topic...Karen, didn't we compare D2 cockpits at one time. If I remember correctly, wasn't there a difference between your D2 and mine?

LOL, Alan. For some reason I always thought you were rather tall. Now I have doubts. :-)

Hey Paul,

Yes, we did, and I can't for the life of me recall what you'd done, but it seemed you had adjusted things so you had more room? Some kind of magic mojo between your seat adjustment, steering wheel and bat's lips? Now, share your secret......again? I've got CRAFTS syndrome you know!

Karen :-)
