I am new to this arena? I have seen this mentioned quite often. What's the difference between the two?

Thanks
Doug

Have you done a search for this in the archives?

DII: about 6" longer, slightly wider, bigger wheels (18" rims vs 16" on D1), no CDL, has ETC & ACE, slightly different cosmetics

D1: opposite of all that

Doug,

D1 was imported to the US from 1994 - 1999 (first half), but was in production since 89(?) in the UK.

D2 started selling mid99 to present.

Main differences, D1 slightly shorter and narrower than D2 (I think by 2 inches and 4 inches). D2 has a longer butt, hence poor departure angle when off-roading. D2 is way more civilized and has more creature comforts than D1 for on-road driving. On the downside, more electronics that can fail. The biggest issue for the D2 if used as a trail truck is the lack of CDL (Central Differential Lock) and not easy to fix on the trails (if you can even fix 'em).

If you do a search on the archives, this has been discussed way too much. Goodluck and welcome to the world of LRs. Check the Photo Gallery. They're grouped into D1s and D2s.

Doug,

Alan and Glenn explained it quite nicely.

Easiest way to tell the difference between a D1 and D2 are the location of the tail-lights. The D2 has tail-lights set higher (parallel to the top of the rear window). You can also tell based on the door handles and other details. Check the photo gallery to see the differences.

Cliff note version:
D1: Better trail vehicle
D2: More refined vehicle for on-road driving, lack of CDL

99, 00, and up to mid year 01 DII's do have CDL, but the linkage is not connected. late year 01 DII's and beyond are reported to have the CDL "stuff" in the transfer case, but without changing the front of the case or tapping the case, there is no simple way to access the "stuff." the tech section has a few "homemade" kits to activate pre mid year 01 CDL's. and there are some selinoid activated kits as well.

fyi...

I'm about to install a D1 shifter in my D2 to enable the CDL. Per Expedition Exchange's instructions.

I've got an early 2001 and the spigot is exposed. However, last weekend I was on the trail with a LR tech who said they all have it exposed and the "late 01" thing was a myth. I probably misunderstood him.

Since I don't have a 2002 handy to crawl under (and they look at me funny when I do that in parking lots) I'm wondering if this is true?

Michael's post sounds the most accurate. I always figured it was still in there they just changed the transfer case casting.

The differance that's easy...D1 can afford....D2 can not afford......(one step further).......110 only chance in hell I have of touching one is at the dealership while I'm getting the D1 fixed (again). See, it's easy to tell which one is which. Any questions?

LOL Bill, you make the 110 sound like the elusive white elephant.

3 kids and a wife, on cops pay. It is the white elephant. I'm am in the market for a 20 year old nymphomanic who owns a Land Rover dealership for possible trade-in.

Ahhhhhh......the white elephant...

I was driving around here in Portland OR trying to find a store and there it was, just sitting in a parking lot, the white elephant.

It had the full roof rack and ladder and a couple of other things. This is the only white elephant I had ever seen. It was an almost religious experiance.

Y'all need to come on down to the San Francisco Bay Area -- we've got at least half a dozen [D110's] around here. (Not to mention a ton of series Dormobiles.)
