My cruise control has gone out, so i took it to the dealer and they want $400, parts and labor somewhere in there, to fix it. They said sometimes a hose comes loose, but that wasn't the problem. So, 400 sounds steep to me. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks

Cooper,
Those vaccuum lines on the cruise system will crack at every connection. I have trimmed all of the ends at least once. I had trimmed one line so much I had to replace it. There is also a component in front of the air box below the jack storage location that I have recently found a cracked line. Yours could be a bad component but it is not a bad idea to check all of the vaccuum lines even though the dealer said they were OK.

Cooper,

I still say it is a cracked hose. It's really hard to check b/c it is so long. While you are working on this I would replace it.
Open the hood and right in front of the drivers side you will see a small black hose coming thru the firewall. Right after that you will see a "T" where the hose will go off the drivers side. It goes from that "T" directly into a device which has a black rubber bulb on it. Pull the hose out of the bulb. Gently push in the bulb and hold your finger over the hole where you pulled the hose from. If the air leaks out you know you have a cracked bulb.
Try that before we go any further. Also if that is not it, it would help to know more symptoms.

if the disco is like the rr system, you may want to try cleaning the toggle on/off switch with electrical cleaner. this worked on mine.

Mine went out about 6 months ago, took it to the dealer (under warranty) and it turned out to be a failed switch under the brake pedal..

FWIW

funny thing....i was just doing some routine work on the truck today and found most of the hoses cracked. just head to a parts store and get some 7/32" ID hose. will replace it all tomorrow.

one more thing, if it matters or not, the master switch works, or at least it lights up. you think it could be the switch on the steering wheel gone bad. i dunno, haven't really heard of that happenng to often. i'll check tommorrow and see.

Rob is right I had the same problem with my 98. I thought I had checked everything but looked at the hose going into the bladder and it was cracked just cut off to newer part of the hose should work.

be carefull not to pull on the hose coming through the firewall too much. easy to disconnect and harder to find where it went. like i did.

Dump valve gets mud and water inside sometimes and the pump seal goes and wont hold air(speed). That or the hoses are probably your problem.

Cooper,
Yes it can be the steering wheel switch. The last time we did the headlinner cleaning(left the sunroof open in the rain) the cruise control died on our Disco. The water draining out of the headliner poured on the wheel. The switch got wet and stopped working. I vacumed out the area of the switch with a shopvac and turned on the heater and let it dry out over night. The cruise started working the next day.

OK, Rob, i did what you said and air does come out from the rubber bulb. Also, the end of the hose that connects to the bulb has a crack in it or it's ripped if you want to call it that. The little hoses look almost dryrotted but are still in tact. So, what does a new bulb cost and how hard is it to fix? ALso, is that more or likely the problem alone or do i need to replace the hoses. Is it a 300-$400 dollar job? Thanks

OK, i trimmed the tips of each hose and slid them back onto where they go so there are no more cracks in the end of the hoses, but i guess that doesn't matter if the bulb is cracked. i cant find where the hose goes to that is under the jack location?

just a little FYI. the hose is 7/32" inside diameter. you can use washer fluid/vacuum hose for this application. and you can get that at most Pep Boys or any other decent parts store. in most cases they are cracked at the ends (like mine in both cases in the past), but i would still recommend replacing the whole line. and also makes sure the line that runs through the firewall is connected to the brake pedal switch.
-there is the main line that runs from the main cruise control next to the jack to the 'T' just to the right of the master cylinder.
-there is a short line that runs from the left hand side of the 'T' to the area of the throttle body.
-and the last piece runs through the firewall. if you are going to trim just the end of any this one is fine, since 90% of it is not subjected to water/mud/etc.

I believe the line that runs to under the jack location goes under the airbox also.

Cooper,

Send me your email address and I will send you the fix including pictures. Fix looks pretty straight forward.

Remove
Disconnect battery negative lead.

Disconnect vacuum hose from actuator.
Remove nut securing actuator to throttle bracket.
Remove actuator, and manoeuvre actuator operating link of the throttle-lever.
Withdraw actuator.
Refit

Inspect rubber diaphragm. Fit a new actuator assembly if diaphragm is damaged.
Reverse removal procedure. Fitting the hook uppermost.
