Hi All!

I have a 99 Disco II w/ 63K miles. When idling, I notice a loud "rattle" on the underside directly between the front and rear doors that seems to be from the middle of the car. It's not a thump or knock, happens when warm (as far as I know), and is periodic at maybe 2-3 second intervals. Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks!

I have a '99 Disco II that does the same thing. I have been meaning to crawl under and see if I can locate the source. I was thinking cats as well...

My guess is cats also. When you give it gas does the sound go away?

See if the heat shield on top of the big muffler is loose.

Your cats are farther to the front than you explain the sound coming from.
My money is on the heat shield for the muffler especially since it rears its annoying head when the truck warms up. Heat makes the exhaust expand which is probably making the shield a bit loose once hot.
On a side note, While you're under there, check the weld from the y pipe into the front of the muffler. At 63k you may be looking at a new exhaust soon if not already done. My 99 II's exhaust broke at that weld at 65k. (with moderate off-roading several times per month, however)

Hey Brian,

I had a similiar episode, take a look at your O2 sensors that are on the cats... mine had wiggled loose, it took three minutes to tighten them... well less than that but i counted the time it took to scrounge through my tool box for a wrench...

I hadn't even thought of the o2 sensor coming loose. Good call.

My cats are bad and some days they make a horrific rattle, and before I knew what it was it kind of intimidated me. Now I just give it a bit of gas and calms them right down.

P.S. I don't not beleive that this is the LRNA authorized method for repairing catalytic converters.

Brian, if those were my cats I would beat the hell out of them. It seems like everyone has problems with their cats. Disco owners must be cat people. If I owned a cat I for one know that I would make sure it kept the hell away from my truck. The last thing I need is a cat crawling up under the truck and making noises while I'm driving. I cant beleive you guys put up with those damn feline's.
IMHO, FWIW, yada,yada
Dan

Dan...that's why gassing the cats is so effective. Shouldnt take too much longer and i will be cat free.

dogs are much nicer.

Thanks, guys! I'll be sure to check all these things out and let you know what I find. And Brian, yes, the sound dissipates when I give it gas... I went out today and tested that idea specifically. Does that mean another notch in the cats column?

Thanks!
Brian
