I bought a 96 Doscovery a year ago and have poured over 5,000 into it. My two new problems are as follows: I had the converter replaced in December. One week later while on a 900 mile trip we heard a noise. One of the combs had come loose. We called our mechanic and made it back home with no problems. He replaced one of the pipes under the car. Three months later the other pipe started making the same noise. He replaced that as well. We were not charged anything however, what is going on? Our mechanic said he can find nothing wrong with the motor or gas mixture. We use only the best gas. Any suggestions as to why the converter is going bad.

Next problem: our Rover just left on a tow truck. It would not start - would not even turn over for two days. Finally,it turned over enough to move it enough to get it in position for the tow truck. It was blowing out black smoke and it sounded terrible as it skipped and cut off several times.
Does this sound like a fly wheel or some other expensive major pocketbook draining disater.

And last, should I dump the Rover?

Black smoke sounds rich. Rich mixture will destroy the cats. I'm not sure why you'd be getting rich mixture but it could be the reason for your cats going.

How are the plugs, wires and coils?

Plugs, etc are all fine. The LR goes in for all its checkups and due to all the problems I have been having it is in the shop at least once every three months.
