Either a D1 or D2? Maybe this sounds like a stupid question to ask but I really don't know is they do or not. It would be a good idea to have one.

What kind of gearbox do you have ?

All automatics have coolers right from the factory. The manuals do not.
There is a provison on the manual boxes to put hoses on (needs an adapter-kit which is available from Rover; military version have them).

Yes probably good idea: autobox won't survive long without cooling its oil. But on light vehicles it is not obligatory: I have seen a 130" Defender whose paint flaked of from the inside surface of the gearbox casing because the oil got so hot! Never observed that on a 90".

Disco 1 and 2 in Saudi have oil coolers on manual 5 speed boxes, so I am surprised that US market doesnt have them. It gets warm down south doesnt it? LH side of tranny, from the alloy adapter between main case and tfer, 2 pipes come forward, then flexible hoses from engine to cross member, and a cooler loop in front of AC condenser - looks like a big long bottle brush - tubing with wire loops on it to shed heat. Even early Discos with 3.5L engine had a gearbox cooler, but no engine oil cooler.
