I've got a 95 Disco w/an Auto tranny. Today I noticed a light on the display that was a red gear with a thermometer in it. When I looked it up, it was the tranny overheat light. The fluid is nice and amber colored and not that old. I don't tow anything, and there's no burning smell and the truck runs and shifts fine. Unfortunately, the truck was plenty hot, so I couldn't check the lever accurately. The level showed about 3" up from the two holes on the dipstick when hot. After I let it cool, should I check the level (idling) with it in park or neutral? If the level is good, then what? There are no transmission fluid leaks. Oil, but not tranny. |

Ooops. BTW, the shop manual says to check the level with the fluid hot in one place and with the tranny cold in another spot. (???) |

Same thing happened with my '02 Disco at 950km. Levels were fine. Dealer said the sensor (thermostat?) was faulty and replaced it. |

Left hand side, a couple inches rearward of the radiator, in the hose/pipe from the radiator trans fluid cooler to the tranny. Under the power steering reservoir. |
