I have a disco 1, and would like to install a second battery in box provided. The only problem. The air intake horn extends into it. So its either a snorkle or cutting the horn out of the front, then install plate to cover hole. Then cut the horn into the left hand side of the box when veiwed from above, facing backwards and slightly down to allow water to run out(if any gets in). Has any body done it? or are you all waiting for me to try it and let you know how it works?

Gary Wilkinson.

I cut the horn off, just have a hole pretty much. I needed room to mount the solonoid for my winch.. I have never had a problem

Get the snorkle. Mine has already saved my rear on numerous occasions.

I helped someone put a snorkel on my truck on Friday. It's a lot easier than it looks. It just takes major balls to cut the fender but have faith in the template. It lined up perfectly.

I just put in a second battery and cut the horn off flat with the box to clear. It makes the intake air noise a little louder. If you install a snorkle you will cover the hole anyway.
I would recommend against putting the horn back on the left side. There will be a greater chance of sucking in water and you will be sure to suck in hot air from the exhaust manifolds. The safari snorkle is set up to attach from the fender side with no mods. The mantec is designed to attach to the front hole, so some mods will be necessary to mount to the side of the box.

Thank you to all the keen rover nuts who responeded.

Gary.

Ps. I will be fitting the snorkle!

Another option is to cut the other end of the filter box off and fit a K & N filter to this which gives you the added bonus of slightly better mileage due to better breathing. Cost in Aussie dollars $130.00

The horn does not need to be cut off. Give it a good healthy tug with some wiggling. I pulled mine off to mount the second battery which, by the way has saved my ass many times after having left the lights on:-(.

Peace,
Paul

John:
If by the factory spot, you mean on the passenger side of the engine compartment, you may be thinking of the Defenders where there is room for two batteries in the original part. The Defenders with their battery beneath the seat have room for two. I believe John Lee's pix of his Defender are in the gallery or tech section.

In the Disco, the common place to put the second battery is in front of the air box. There is room if you buy a fairly small battery. I have done it and the process is so simple that barely warrants a lengthy explanation.

Find a new place to put your jack, put battery in place with whatever means you wish to hold it in place. Using two 48" battery cables from your local Pep Boys, parallel the two batteries and away you go. If you must havew a solenoid to isolate the two, Pep Boys can help you out there too, but remember the solenoid draws some current so use heavy wire. When you run the parallel wires, run them in such a fashion that nothing will be rubbing on them or you'll have a fire.
