Hey all, I've got some scary stuff happening when I take my foot off the gas. The truck begins to slow as normal and then there are sudden bursts of grinding noises coupled with a sudden deceleration you can feel. It doesn't happen as soon as you take your foot off the gas, but a few seconds later.

This sound and effect started after some very mild off-roading.

The only theory I have is that there is something going on when the automatic wants to drop down a gear because I'm slowing. Is there a vacuum line that I could have knocked off? Would that cause this effect?

Please help!

I suppose I should add that it's a '95 Disco and that I am NOT driving it until I can get this sorted out. I see that there are no vacuum lines to the transmission.

The sound only happens when decelerating. I don't know what else to say.

WEll, it is not the tranny. I had my wife drive around the block while I hung my head out the back door and I've isolated it to something in the right rear wheel. Updates as necessary.

Mine did the exact same thing when the rotoflex coupling needed replacing. I never noticed it until I did the OME lift.

Sounds like a broken wheel bearing. Pull the hub and take a look around. Do it soon before you destroy the spindle (if it isn't destroyed already)

Doug:

Call up the dealership and ask them which rear bearing they replaced on the truck previously. And better yet, go to the dealership ASAP and have them drive around the block with you.

If you issue you descibed above doesn't happen consistantly, then I'll bet you it's the bearing. The mild off-raoding most likely stressed the already old and tired bearing that has 170K on it.

Could be a U loint , could be a wheel bearing. Could be the Roto. And could very likely be a diff...

Jeez, everyone's so upbeat!

Anyway, I replaced the rear brake pads and associated pins & clips. The rear pads were fallen forward and were resting on the hub, for lack of a better word. (see pic)

The pads wore a groove approx. 1/4 inch deep into the hub! After replacing, they were positioned correctly. No more rubbing.

Unfortunately, the sound is still there. I will have the service guy from the dealership ride around the block as Brian suggested and see what he says. Updates to come.

By the way, that isn't a picture of my wheel, it is for illustration only.
