Has anyone done the non-reflective paint to a black Discovery before. I have a black disco and it creates a nice glare in the sun as well. If so, how did you do it. Tape and paint? What kind of paint? Primer and then paint or just paint? Or, is doing a black one unheard of.

Thanks

I know a guy who has done it, on a blue. It makes even more sense to do it on a black one though, personally. I will check with him, but as I recall... it ended up being kind of expensive with all the paint. He just taped it off, as I recall. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

What kind of paint should be used. I'm assuming flat black. Do you just tape it off on the hood and spray paint it? Has anyone else done this themselves and if so how difficult is it.

There is a special pain and I have seen it posted on this board. Check the archive. I have been thinking of doing the Union Jack over the whole bonnet in non glare. Now that would be cool.

I had mine painted by a body shop for about $100. They used Flat Black. But be careful, since the paint doesn't have wax on it, it is very hard to get mud off. It actually almost stains it.

yo coop,
it really isnt that big a deal to do. it just takes a lil time and a warm day out. i used krylon primer and their flat black paint. that along with some masking tape and newspaper. it took most of the afternoon but looks good. i would recomend sanding the primer and dusting the hood prior to appling the black. (i didnt and i have a real grainy look to the finish product) other than that its a snap. just take your time and dont drink and paint...hehehe. oh the cost not including the fosters was about 25 dollars US.
miked1 the union jack on black would be cool

used Krylon Ultra Flat black in a spray can the 1st time around. this turned out to be the best flat black. a year or so later (without a garage) i used a can of Krylon flat black and a roller. this creates a texture kinda like the bed liner stuff. be sure if you use a roller, use a roller that is lint free, or you'll get some pubes on the hood...

Excuse the stupid question, but what does the paint do for you? Is it a heat exchange issue? or what?

Another suggestion...go to your local sign shop (one that does decals, etc) and have them do the area in a vinyl decal. It does the job and also if you want to remove it, they can take it off in about 10 minutes and it looks like it was never there.

Emilio- it eliminates the suns glare from your hood.

Emilio, in addition to sun glare reduction, the flat black bonnet also keeps your roof rack lights from blinding you at night on the trail.
(It also looks really cool!)
