I have about 50k on my 97 and the tread on the Michelin X4's is looking a bit thin. How many miles is average before safety concerns require replacement (I realize that several variables affect this) ? Also, is there a "bargain brand" tire that works well but is less spendy than the original equipment rubber ? Thank you

as long as the tires are round and the tread pattern is to your liking.......get 'em.

how will you be using your truck?

everybody has their favorite brand. i have had good luck with Cooper, Dunlop and Bridgestone in my past.

I have a tire sold by discount tire called the pathfinder SUV. they seem to be working fine for me. price is $88 as compared to $212 for the michelins.

There is a witness mark in tread that announces you have to change them. The reason is that tread is then so small that water can´t evacuate, and drive in wet pavement is dangerous. 50k is a good milleage.

Robert,

If you plan to keep the disco on the road all of the time, get Dunlop Radial Rover A/T. My dad has them on his disco and the thing rides so much better than the Mich. XPC. Also, in the snow, they are very good at keeping the truck on the road. Off road, they are ok, but not real great.

Thank you for the advice. I ordered a set of Contitrak SUV's from the tirerack.com for $273 shipping incld. (p.s. this is the stock rubber for the new Ford Escape) RG
