I just bought a Hilift Jack and was testing it out. On a stock D1 bumper it doens't feel quite right lifting it there. You can't fit it under your axle like the disco jack nor can you fit it on the side(door area) due to plastic. The front area being all plastic too seams a little weak for it too. What is the best way to use this HiLift to my Disco? and do I need any of the attachments to do so? |

You need an aftermarket bumper (front and rear) , ARB and the like. As for the sides you need rock sliders. Other than that, you'd better stop experimenting or you'll be sorry. |

In the meantime, you can always learn how to winch with it. |

I agree. Both the front and rear stock bumpers on a Disco are too weak to be used as jacking points. You can only use it in the rear receiver and even then it is a little sketchy. ARB makes a special adapter for their bumpers. I'm not sure about any of the other after-market bumpers. Thanks, Mike B. |

Or, ... if you're not in the position (or mind frame) to get new HD bumpers, (which in the case require new springs, and possibly new shocks - all of this effects your drivetrain to some degree) at least, (IMHO, FWIW, etc.) get yourself some rocksliders. I think Michael Noe had a great point, too: "In the meantime, you can always learn how to winch with it." Best wishes, Kim |

Oh, forgot to mention, as far as the winching goes, make sure you've got your recovery points covered ... i.e. safe and solid as possible. Kim |

Damn that sucks, With all the praise on this list about the Highlift I thought that was the jack to get for a Disco. |

Mike, you *can* jack up the rear using the hitch. It is unstable, though. I use this method if I am high centered or stuck in ruts to jack the truck up and push it one way or the other. Tom |

actually the stock disco jack is a great accessory. works better than just about any bottle jack i've seen and can still be used after you lift your truck, it also is catches the axle to prevent slippage. and another bad thing about the hi-lift is it always has the potential to do body damage if the thing slips, you have to be extra careful using it especially during recoveries |

Mike, A new product is out by Terrain Master that incorporates 2 front High-Lift jacking points, 2 front recovery loops and a front skid/bash plate. It is the first one I have seen that integrates all of these functions, but I'm sure Kyle could build a better one if he wanted to (say, with solid mounts for a KVT-modified LR Brushbar and, god-forbid a bombproof high-center hitch receiver / removable winch mount) Check it out at the Atlantic British Site at the following link: http://www.roverparts.com/product_list.asp?c=&sc1=%2D+All+%2D&c1=%2D+All+%2D&type=&v=&r1=ALL&a1=ON&d1=ON&i1=ON&p1=1&Bookmark=22 It is a little pricey at $425 (aluminum) or $495 (steel), but it is a nice 3-in-1 setup. To use it correctly, you also need to get a D90 adaptor for your jack. It is listed as a JackAll model but it should work on a High-Lift jack as well. If not, I believe you can get one for a High-Lift. The Link at Atlantic British for this item is: http://www.roverparts.com/product_list.asp?c=&sc1=%2D+All+%2D&c1=%2D+All+%2D&type=&v=&r1=ALL&a1=ON&d1=ON&i1=ON&p1=1&Bookmark=31 For potential rear jacking/recovery, Get a TJM Rear Bumper. Looks like a High lift would work well beside either of the recovery eyes of the bumper. You can get the bumper at either 4x4 Connection ($499, plus $100 shipping) http://www.4by4connection.com/lanrovdistjm2.html or at Expedition exchange ($500, plus $90-130 shipping) http://www.expeditionexchange.com/tjm/index.htm Depending on how much you run on the rocks, both of these Items would be a wiser purchase before buying Rock Sliders. |

Nice write up, Rich Lee! For front recovery you can manufacture your own jackpoint+recovery point+steering guard+steeringstabilizer relocation, using David Bowyer/Terrainmaster ideas + some more from this forum (relocation idea). You need to be able to cut 8-10mm steel to a template; you're using 3 10mm bolts each side so should make stuff sturdy. (....eerrrrr that's STILL what I intend to make...) For rear, you can easily make a jacking point to be mounted behind the towball, giving one jackpoint each side. I think both Bowyer and Terrainmaster make these. I have some pics on these things on Ottos homepage, describing what it's all about. For a complete writeup of the finished stuff, it seems you'll have to wait quite some time I'm afraid. Roverly Yours, Frode |
