I drove a D1 for the first time and like most of it except for the seating position. It's so high that I couldn't see overhead traffic lights etc. and I had the seat adjusted down as low as I could go. Is there any way the seat can be modified to lower it a couple of inches?

I am around 6'2" and the only way I can get comfortable is to move the seat all the way back and tilt the front up and the back down. Not great but managable.. I have looked at the seat every which way but sunday to try to find a way to move it but so far no luck. Amputation may be less work than moving that seat. Consider that, I know a good Doctor.......

I am 6'6" and just lean on over and squint up or look through the sunroof or drive with traffic. I would say it is due to short brits designing it but I am a brit so that's not it...

Rick,

try driving a Rangie classic, Disco would look like a big relief :)

Rangie's seats are higher, steering column non-adjustable, and steering wheel larger by a lot. so my seat's all the way back, and my back's bent so i could reach the wheel... trading off knee cramps for back pain :)

You guys can't see the traffic signals and I can't reach the darned foot rest! Just bought mine last week and the only thing (seating-wise) I'd like to see changed is the length of the seats. I'm 5'4" and am not accustomed to a seat not reaching the back of my knees!

Get used to not pulling up close to the intersection. It's a pain when you stop before the underground light sensor.

I use the reflection in the hood to see when the light changes.

ROTFLMAO here, ... not at anyone's post ... I have a D2 ... Dh (dear husband) is a little over 6'3" ... Out of curiousity, I just asked him about this topic, and what he does when he drives it ... LOL ... He said, (and I quote) "Yeah, it really sucks ... I just put the seat back as far as it will go, drive and look at the road in front of the hood." So, I say, "what?!!" He says, "Well, otherwise, I'd have to adjust your seat. I know how mad you get when you have to readjust your seat ..." I say, "whua????" He says, "Oh don't worry, if we're offroad, I'll adjust it down as far as it will go ...." (now I'm getting truly frightened). Luckily I drive the Disco 90% of the time. ?????

I have seen some where you can move the seat back about an inch using preexisting holes. I think someone did a write up on it. If you look you can see if you have the holes or not.

Also you can move the seats back with more involved methods. I have seen vehicles set up for people in the 7ft range.

as far as lower no have not seen anything BUT where there is a will there is a way. A metal fab shop and some brackets could not be too expensive.

At 5'7" I'm loving the seats in my Disco, I keep em' high.

I feel like a king sitting "up there"..... but I could see how a tall guy/gal could have a slight problem.

In jolly ol' England, all of the traffic lights are on posts at eye-level... they don't use overhead lights. That, combined with a shorter average height, is why they didn't even think about it. The DII isn't as bad as a DI, but it's still not great. I use the reflection on the hood where I can, other lights I stop back further away, and others I just have to do the lean-n-tilt the head to see.... Or, just wait til the guy next to you goes, then jump on it.... :)

I'm 6'7", and I've never seen a traffic light while driving my 95. I have manual seats, and yes, there is a second set of mounting holes on the seat rails that allow you to move the seat back about 3/4". Doesn't sound like much, but my right knee thanks me every time I drive.

Unfortunately, moving the seat back does nothing for seeing traffic lights. If I'm first in line at the light, I either lean forward, or look through the sunroof.

Try to get a D1 with Manual seats - they fit better for taller people. The power seats suck.

Tom's right. Plus the power seat control mountings always snap off. And you know the seats will break one day...

Philly area has a second set of lights at eye level. But in other areas, I wait for someone to honk the horn and send obscenities my way.

Some very creative suggestions!

I hadn't thought about the hood reflection idea... that might work.

Paul, I live in the LA area and we have the 2nd set of lights at eye level but a lot of the left turn signals are only available above.

When I was driving away from the dealer, something else came to mind. On cars from the '40s and '50s they had those huge external visors that fit above the windshields, which also blocked overhead signals. There was an accessory that you could buy that was made out of a clear, fluted plastic and mounted the the dashboard. The idea was that the flutes would reflect the light from the overhead signals. I don't know if it worked or not.

Maybe they could start installing one of those small windows like in the rear just over the rear view mirror, but in front of the sun roof on either side so you could see the overhead lights.

Personally, I think they need to stick more computerized junk in the rovers, so maybe an electronic color sensor tied to a dash display. :)

I just lean down when I can't see the light, but someone up here in the Philly area must have thought of such things as they tend to have both overhead and pole lights.

I'm 6'1" by the way in a DII.

Cheers,

Greg P.

oops, sorry Paul D. - Didn't realize you had already commented on Philly.

Hey, you don't have a new set of LR valve stem caps today, do ya? ;) Just kidding......

There is a second set of holes - gets you about.75"-1" extra leg room. Do a search, I did a write up on it about 6-7 months ago titled "best mod for tall guys" or something like that.

the jist is that you need a torx bit (t-50 if I recall) and the trick is to slide the seat back and undo the front, then slide the seat forward to get at the rear torx bolts. Not hard and a big payoff (like Tomo said - it doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference).

I'm 6'4". The Rover is what my wife drives. But when I'm in it, I just look at the light reflection on the bonnet (hood). The Disco is British Racing Green, dont know if that helps or not. But when I had my white one, I did the same thing, seemed to work. Of course the D11 doesn't have this problem since they made the glass bigger on the windscreen.

I wish I could swing the $$$ for a D2 but right now, I'm looking at a D1.

Moving the seat back might help with leg room but wouldn't it make the overhead view thing worse??

I dunno... I'm just asking?

FTW I'm about 6'0" but my trunk is probably a little longer and my legs are a little shorter than the average 6 footer.

I'm 6'4" and remounting the seat in the second set of holes really helped the legroom. My other cars are small, so the disco seems big and roomy except for the wifes full size Ford Truck, its like sitting on a couch in the living room, real comfy. The rover just wraps around you, but I wouldnt lower the seat even if I could, the current position makes for a more comfortable leg position. Between my MG Midget and the Rover, I'd just say that the people at Rover Group that design interiors are not 6'4"?
