about a week ago, my 96 Disco 1(the stock one) would not start, but i was able to jump start it. So, I assumed it was the battery. The car ran fine and started every time until today. Today the car would not start multiple times, so I got a new battery. After installing it, the truck started right up, and ran fine. After turning the car off again, it restarted, but would not idle, and would go completely dead, so now its at the dealer getting checked out.
Has anyone else had any problems like this?
Here are a couple ideas I had
-Before replacing the batter this afternoon, the truck kept stalling on the way to Napa if the RPMs dropped to low, so whenever i stopped, I would drop it into Neutral and rev it to about 1500 RPM's, so the truck was essentially running off the alternator....could this have screwed up the computer or anything?
-Could the alternator just be shot? Maybe it isnt charging the batter right or something...
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas let me know
Thanks
Will

If it is the alternator....does anyone have the replacement one from Atlantic British....its a non genuine part...and is $400...anyone? Also, does anyone know what the cost is to get a new one installed at dealer?
Thanks

I've learned from experience that the threshold is somewhere between 9.3 and 9.4 volts. Below 9.3, nothing will work...absolutely nothing.

Usually, the primary symptom of a dead/dying alternator is a tach that doesn't work. But you said that you rev'ed to 1,500, so the tach is working, eh?

The stalling at idle may be another, unrelated problem, like a dirty IAC valve, AKA the stepper motor. Cleaning is easy...you just need a 5.5mm nutdriver or socket.

Cheers

It is also possible that you got a bad new battery. Yup, I've had a brand new one that wouldn't hold a charge.

I'ce had that problem: here is what I have done at one time or another:

- new battery
- new starter
- new alternator
- clean stepper motor
- replace stepper motor
- new wires and dist. cap
- new wire from coil
It does seem to be working for now!
who knows what's next??

Will,

It would be easy for us all to say the alternator but, Have you done or have you had any other work done on your truck lately?

Will, where do you live? I have experienced a similiar problem that occurs in the spring and fall on both my Rover and my car. They don't idle very well and will stall at low rpms. I add a small bottle of gasline antifreeze and the problem disappears within minutes. I believe it might have something to do with warm, moist days and cool nights producing condensation in the fuel tank. It may or may not work for you but it is worth try.

good luck.

Jeff...I am in Atlanta GA.
Took the truck to the shop and they said that all it needed was idle adjustment (???I dont think it could have possibly been that)and they charged about 300 bucks.....I could have done that!!! Oh well, I'll see if thats what the real problem was when I get the truck back.

Give us a breakdown of your bill if you don't mind, parts, labor and what they end up saying they did for $300.

TIA
