Lately my 97 D1 has been stalling when idling in traffic in which I've had to press the gas a little to maintain the rpms to keep form stalling. ALso when first stating it has a rough idle for about 5 minutes. Once up to speed on the freeway it drives fine though. SO far everyhitng I've checks looks OK. The only thing different I've did to it recently was add the Stop leak stuff to my oil to try to stop all the leaky parts. Not sure if related or not. Any suggestions?

Mine 95 is doing the same thing. Haven't fixed it yet because it doesn't do it all the time, but I believe it may be the stepper motor - just a hunch based on some past reading.

Hope you get some responses to this question as my "D1 Hard Starting" question didn't get any. Seems everyone is busy responding to the Rover vs. Jeep "technical discussion."

HArd starting could be a pump relay that primes the rail before you actually crank the key. Bad idle is more then likely the stepper motor. There is a faq here on the stepper motor...

Mine had the same problem ('95MY). replaced the wires, the cap, and the wire from the coil. Fixed!

Also replaced the stepper motor. But it was still idling rough until I did the wires.

do what jay did..check the spark plugs and wires..cap and rotor...if they have been on a while replace them all..dont forget to add a few drops of oil down the "tube" that the rotor goes on.
