I dig the Mantec because it is a cleaner design and less obtrusive.

However I can't get over the price points. Namely $400 for it. So, that brings me back to the ARB. Seems to do the job, at $275 it's a steal.

What are your opinions?

I built my own for my Suzuki Samurai for $20 last year and just bought/installed the $275 (+$42 s/h...) ARB last month. I think the ARB looks sweet, but the wife thinks the one I made on the Samurai looks better. Go figure. No regrets on the ARB though, fun project, looks great, feels peppier at freeway speed.

Did you build your own snorkel out of aluminum tubing Robert ? For 70 bucks ? Or a cheesy home depot PVC snorkel ? :)

"Well that leads me to ask. Why are you here ? Seems you are pulling a "Perrone" on the Snorkel deal....

Kyle"

wow thats pretty harsh

turns out I keep meeting scout guys that also own discos.

go ahead and flame me guys but the fact is if it wasent for scouts , discoes would never have been here. scouts are the first true suv.

IH coined the word in 1964 with yes ...A SCOUT

and yes Kyle when youv been wheeling for 25 years some guy on the then new telepathic sky forum that drives a sony suv may ask you then a crusty old rover guy why are you here?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why I'm I here? Humm I didn't realize that I needed a invite? Should I leave and stay in my little black sheep forum?
Pulling a Perrone? I think not. Everything is firsthand and done by me, no speculation on my part. It's factual and not total BS. I can't see your Perrone connection? Could you please explain yourself.
Holy shit ! So the Scout is the first true SUV eh ? lol That should start some shit. And Musky , if I had made the statement Robert did on a board I would fully expect someone to ask me that question.
Robert , dont place yourself so high as to be a "Black sheep". Again , where are the pics of the Snorkel on your Disco ? Or was this guy asking about a scout ?
pirate can be really rude
I have never found it that way. its more like a animated search engine to the real offroad 4wheel drive world.
I have been around the hobby for 2 decades plus
I also have owned at least one 4 wheel drive for the better part of my driving life because our roads can be covered in ice for months at a time.
I came to Discoweb in search of some great info on a disco I purchased to aid in the self care I do on all my rides. I never pay anyone to work on my rides. that makes a site like discoweb a great asset.the large group of street driven discoes is its greatest asset. the numbers factor is what does it. the quirks are very evident and easy to see comming if you just read a little.
the fact that when I'm reading I cant help but stop and try to help someone with simple shit that is most common on this board is the 4 wheel drive ethic that says you stop and help a fellow wheeler when he needs it.
now if you really want off-road rover/Disco stuff Pirate sure does seam to be the place if you look at all the guys really doing the hardcore rover thing over here, they are over there alot as well.
there is a place for both forums, the wize man uses bits and pieces from all over.
Your right Kyle he didn't ask about one for a scout. I never brought it up that I built for a scout until you started being an ass. The Mantec snorkel, like most rover things is very much over priced. The fact was that with a few readily available parts you can build you own in about half a day. DIY was the only intent of my first post, because I have done just that.
Building one for any truck is pretty much the same, so why split hairs on the application . I guess your a little bored with the tech your get to pick on, Valve stem caps and Grand Cherokee tech not keeping you happy?
I'll start building one for the disco so that youll we happy. I'll need to add one special tool for the hole in the fender hole. http://www.mittlerbros.com/products/tubemaster.htm so I guess that blows the 70.00 figure.
kyle
sure looks like the same guys to me doing "the real thing"(if that means hardcore rover)
you should be happy,. those guys spread the word about Discoweb over there.
I think discoweb needs to burp for a weekend and let you go have some fun. you sound like you need some wheeling.
hell if Discoweb went down for a weekend it would bring EE back into the mix that would be cool.
lol
I'd say lets meet and wheel in Telico but youd be let down that when I arrive in my scout.
Just thought i'd add abit to this thread.......
WTF do you (kyle) have an issue w/ someone owning a rig other than a disco??? ( I understand that they are the focus of this forum, but some, if not all, tech info trancends brand, a snorkle for a disco is the same as a snorkle for a scout, is the same as a snorkle for a GEO, GET IT????) WTF does it matter, wheelin is wheelin, If you want to build a rig, at a certan (SP) point you realize that brand doesnt matter, it is the compontnts (60's :)) and fabrication (not fabricating some story either, I meand grabin da fire stick and makin it happen) that make the rig, not what factory it rolled out of. And the hight thing, i'm 5'2", but fail to see how that applies to the issue at hand.
Sorry to interupt the quality tech info goin on over here.
Here is my advice for buildin a snorkle.
1.)Get some exhaust pipe,(a 90 bend +5" or so on one side and your desired hight on the other) and a diesel snorkle hat (found in almost any junkyard, try checking any diesel AG equipment) 2.) Attach the hat to the pipe (usually as simple as tightening the clamp )
3.)Then find a gas tank filler grommet for any application that use a filler neck of the diameter of the pipe you used (Scout ones work great), and cut a hole to fit the gromet.
4.)apply sealer to the gromet ,and install it, slip the pipe in through the gromet, cut away any inner fender that interferes with the pipe.
5.) the easiest way to hook up the snorkle is to use the flexable connection pipe that runs between the throttlebody and airbox in many late model cars and trucks (88-95 ford trucks are a good source of this, but if you prefer a more rigid connection you can fab a solid conennection if you desire) If you choose to use the rigid connection, the soft couplers for PVC pipe work well for that.
6.) Now you need to build a bracket for the snorkle you can either drill the windshield frame and bolt the brakcet on, or use a bracket that attaches to the rain gutter (if applicable)
Got tech????
I frequent the Pirate Board often, but have not registered because I don't give a crap about posting pics, or how many posts I've had. It seems to be a big competition over there about who can post more than the other guy... Half the time they are fighting each other to say "use the search button newbie" gee that's some helpful info...
I use that site for what it's worth... A HUGE database of information, specs, opinions etc.. the rover contigency is pretty weak though. there are a few guys that seems to know what they are talking about(not that I have any clue! LOL), but the rest hang out waiting to jump on that oh so glorified "use the fuckin search button" post.
Most Pirates really put my junk to shame, but there seems to be a whole lot of 'Cabin Boys' over there also.
While I don't agree with his choice of language, I have to come to Adams defense here. I don't know the guy from, well, Adam, but I have seen his posts and links about his classic swb Rangie and he is most certainly for real. He is many times at odds with the faithful because he dares to say out loud that, "the emperor has no clothes". Yes, its okay say it with me "THE ROVER DRIVELINE IS AN ABOMINATION BEFORE GOD". You can buy all the silly Great Basin Robbers and Ashcrap parts you want for your rover axles but unless they include the correct quantity of pure snake oil to lube them with look out. The first time you plan on putting any real horsepower into them wear comfortable shoes and pack a lunch. I am now going to include some real swear words so this post will still fit in this thread ready ..... SPIRAL BEVEL ..... SWIVEL BALLS ..... UNDERDRIVE HIGH RANGE TRANSFERCASE ..... ROTOFLEX
If Adam wants to talk about uptight forum runners (what is the correct term for people like Kyle anyway) he should go check out Ian at www.xterraownersclub.com, when he's done he might have a new appreciation for the way Kyle handles things around here. I am sure that will get it done on a beater Scout but perhaps you should know something about a Disco before you hand out directions on mounting your abomination on a Disco. So no , you dont "Got tech" . I suppose the people here could just hack a hole in the hood and run a hunk of tubing stright up and out of it. Maybe anchor it back to the rack or something and make it removeable. Sure it will work , but is that what a Disco owner wants ? Maybe a Scout owner or a beater Suzi owner.... I doubt you will get many Disco takers...
so many points (on the top of heads) so little time. before i go to the mean streets let me re-hash a point that has been made (by who i dont remember) the Land Rover, i dare say the Discovey in particular is designed, packaged, and even advertised as an ALL PURPOSE VEHICLE (i believe that a tag on the drivers door even says that). for those who are not clear that means it is a jack of all trades but not a specialist at any. it can be made into a true trailer drawn rocker climber, bogg buster, or a true expedition vehicle. in its stock form it is competitive with the scouts of old (i can say this for i have OWNED two a 72 and a 74) it can and does out perform the grand and not so grand cherokees. i know this hurts feelings but facts are facts and remember i said stock. that means you havnt done a damn thing but put gas in it. with modifications any vehicle can be made into the most extreme rock crawling-mud slinging-mall cruising truck that man (or woman of any ethnic group) has ever seen. but that takes cash. if you dont have the mula you make parts or have them made by a "friend". (for the record its fun fabricating you own shit money or not). now i have been shocked by the need for horse power as mentioned by the esteemed super I. its kinda like the penis envy thing, dont blame me freud started all that. its not horse power than wins championships, its knowing what to do with the horse power that will get you to the podium. so the need for a full blown, nitrous injected, 44 inch shod, 20 inches of lift no flexing j**p is well silly. they look good at the local stop and rob but in the real (non mtv) world we live in they are just silly, pointless! whew, nothing like reading the ole discoweb to get me ready for cops and robbers. i am done, so i will be child like and say- Land Rovers rule all the rest suck. there its been said and written now wander on back to your friends and tell them how rude those kyle's cronies are then go cruise the white castles and drink some bud light.
Some of the message boards at POR are pretty hardcore, 44 Boggers and full external body cages.
They talk about going to the Hammers, Sledge Hammer, Wrecking Ball, etc in S. California. The Hammer trails are not recommended for vehicles that have
less than a 33 inch tire and vehiclese without
lockers. The Hammers make the Rubicon Trail in California look like a family SUV run.
O yea, I read all the message boards not just the Land Rover board at POR. So yea, some of the stuff they talk about is very hardcore. I am not picking sides.
wow you guys have got to be f'n kidding...
now you're a high brow badass w/ a thick wallet because you now decided to own a rover.......and be a "wheeler" or should i say a "net" wheeler.
so i guess you always had your nose in the air even when you owned a less superior automobile....OH wait...my mistake, i guess you always owned a LR....from 16 years old on....
way too much posing here....it's this kinda BS that makes people badmouth a really good truck....basically because of its jackass owners.
Oh Anon-
f*ckin web wheeler. It's blatantly obvious you've been reading the WTF thread on the Pirate board and just had to chime in. Thanks for waking up a perfeclty dead and useless thread. I fail to see where anyone here claims that they are better than anyone else for having bought a Rover. That is sooooo gay and shallow minded.
Dude- You need to actually read some of the threads on POR instead of looking at all the pretty pictures. There are maybe MAYBE three guys over there that earn my respect as intelligent contributors. The rest are just poseurs just like on any 4x4 site on the web.
F*ckin grow up, and learn to use the (off-road) internet for what it's worth. 95% BS and 5% usefull info that can help you with your projects.
Not everyone buys a $40k rig off the showroom floor btw- Ever heard of a USED CAR??? Rovers can be picked up in good shape for less than 10k, and with a few mods, and delicate use of the loud pedal, can be made to tackle some pretty serious terrain.
If you had any experience in life, you would know better than to classify an entire site into some category just because a couple guys disagree on something.
Well, 'Analonymous' has been used already, so we'll just call you 'Bandwagon'
Thanks for all the insight and usefull info on snorkel kits Bandwagon.... You Rock!!
