While inspecting my front brake pads (replacing them this weekend) I noticed that I can rotate the jacked wheel (center diff locked) about 10 degrees forward or back before the front driveshaft would start to turn. The front drive shaft would then rotate about 1/8th turn before stopping. My question is, is all this play "normal" or do I have problems brewing? It's a 98 D1 with about 115K. TIA |

I think this is the normal landrover drivetrain slop. If it turned freely or with clucks and grinding I would be worried. Have you checked or changed your diff fluid recently? If the diff were broken you might can feel for bits and pieces after removing the drain plug and sticking you finger in there. Any reason to think you broke something? My point is - there is a normal amount of slop and I have the same amount and mine is not broken. Go ahead and change the diff oil with Mobile 1 synthetic 90w or any 90w for that matter - these things like clean fluids. If you want to inspect the cv just chck the Haynes manual or factory manual. Very simple DIY. JB |
