The other day, the anti-lock light came on and stayed on in my 95 Disco. I looked in the workshop manual and learned that the light could be on for a number of reasons, but chances are that the ABS in the car is not working. I confirmed this fact over the phone with my local dealer, whom I have formed a wonderful relationship with since purchasing the car 4 years ago and its many shop visits since. Non-existant ABS would not really matter to me, except for the fact that a day or so after the light came on, the automatic transmission gear selector began jamming in park. That is, when I depressed the brake pedal to shift from park to reverse, it wouldn't go, just as if I didn't have the brake pedal depressed. It takes a solid jamming of the brakes coinciding with a quick pull of the gear selector to get the car from park into another gear. This doesn't happen all the time, but about 50% of the time. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem, and if it is in any way connected to the anti-lock light being on. Any ideas or previous experiences and solutions would be helpful as the parts for a fix plus the $72/hour labor rate at the dealership aren't very appealing for the college student. I know that if it is connection between the ABS and the jamming AT, I'll have to get it fixed, but if anyone has had this problem before, I would like to know how you went about rectifying it. Thanks, John |

Well, I called my dealership today and told them about the gear selector sticking, and he said it was the brake switch that lets the gear selector disengage from park that was probably broken. He said he had had to go to people's homes to fix them before because they had broken and wouldn't let the gear selector move. Anyway, I don't know if that's in any way related to the anti-lock light or not, but it's going in the shop next Wed. to go on the testbook and see and fix the brake switch. I'll post the answers I get in case anyone else runs into the problem. |

John, it's a $30 part, buy two and have one as a spare. they do fail. No need to go to testbook, just stick your head under the steering column, you'll see all you need. peter |

You think that's what's making the anti-lock light come on? That's really the only reason I was gonna take it to the dealer was to see what the light was on for. |

no i believe the two are unrelated. ABS light most likely is caused by loose or broken wheel speed sensor, you can crawl around and make sure they are sitting snug in the housings. BTW, ABS light off doesn't mean that ABS is working, either. peter |
