Ok, Its time to make the final descision.
Commuting 100 miles day with a full size blazer with a small block 350, Almost all highway miles at 65-70mph. Getting 16-17mpg.

Will a 96-97 discovery be any worse on MPG? I want a 4x4 vehicle with some towing capacity. The disco will meet that. I want something that is comfortable and somewhat roomy. The disco meets that. I need something as good as (or is that as bad as) the chevy on MPG.

Can the disco meet my fuel requirements? The edmund report show 16mpg, Is that what the real world is seeing?

A big difference will come from the roof rack - the exact same rack-free vehicles on a 80 mph long haul recently were filling up with almost exactly 3/4 of the volume the racked vehicles were drinking. Consider that when you get more info.

As low as 8(wheeling) and as high as 22(tailwind down the pass). The real numbers for me were about 17mpg with a roof rack. Hope that helps.

stock? with a D1 i doubt you will see that kinda mileage. i cannot speak for a stock truck, but i get about 14-15 TOPS on the highway. who knows now with the new tire/wheel combo. ugh.

I just got my first Disco about a month ago - it's a 2002 SD. I drive about 40 miles round trip every day. I'm getting anywhere between 14 - 18 mpg combined driving (mostly highway). Driving the speed limit definately helps, as does smart driving.

My last car was a 1995 318is BMW (4 cyl), so the increased gas consumtion of the Disco was to be expected.

I'm glad my commute is under 40 miles round trip. I'm not sure I'd drive this puppy with a commute like yours, but then again, I love this vehicle and I'm hooked.

i get about 11-12 mpg. thats with 32 inch tires and a 3 inch lift. now of course that was the exact same mileage i was getting before the tires and lift. i was once told that if it has full time four wheel drive and any weight to it you can figure that the gas mileage wont be any better than what i am getting now. mileage should be on the list of things to consider when making a real off/on road vehicle purchase but IMHO it should not be near the top.

I put on 8mm plug wires and Platinum 4 plugs and I am getting average of 20 mpg with 235/85's, stock gears and automatic. Plus I notice a power difference and the engine runs much smoother at idle.

I switched out the plugs and wires to try and smooth out the choppy idle and a day or two after switching I started noticing a little more power, probably just more responsive to the pedal caused by better conduction, anyway and then I took a 500 mile trip and was getting 20 MPG, couldn't believe it.

I will check again next weekend when go on next trip and report back.

BTW, I used ACCEL 8mm wires from local parts store for about $35. Thought about getting the Magnacore but then figured we aren't drag racing so if I just go with 8mm in the brand that most guys with big engines run then I am not going to notice enough difference in them from the Magnacor which would have cost me about 1/3 more.

As for the plugs, they were a little costly, $6/each, didn't realize the price difference in them and the other Platinums, till I had put them in. I would probably say you could just use the Platinum + or 2 and get same performance.

20! Thats great. I once did a cross country trip and got as high as 17.

As for commuting, I do a 75 mile trip every day. My overall avg is 15. The disco burns gas, sure, but is a great commute car. It rides nice and comfy, is tall enough to see far down the highway, makes it through rain and snow, handles pot holes, has a nice turning radius and is a LOT safer than most cars. It used to cost me $40 per week, now with prices up, its about $50. I have been thinking about a used Civic for commuting just for the 40 mpg they get.

That's interesting about the wires...are the stock wires that bad or just wear out after a while. I have a 97 Disco which averages about 17-18 on the highway, but I would love to change those plug wires, currently running Bosch +4 and they make a difference.

I think that its mainly a factor of the stock ones just getting worn out. My plugs were so worn out that when I was pulling then off the last year to change the plugs most of the boots came off the wire, so I had jerry rigged them back together with pliars and duct tape.

When you go to put new ones in why not improve the conductivity and put in 8mm with better insulation.

Joey,

if you drive your V8 NAS Disco trying to mimic the dynamics of a TD5, I believe you'd see low 20s in your gas mileage.

given these numbers, I don't believe 20mpg from a gasoline V8-powered disco, neither in 3mpg difference rendered by $35 wires and POS Bosch Platinum plugs.

On one long trip from SoCal to Colorado and back, I kept track of my mileage and gasoline receipts. At every stop, I tried to top off the tank to minimize the effect of the pump's shut-off valve. The gas mileage varied from 11 to 19 mpg, very predictably with cruising speed. The best number resulted from a leisurely drive from Grand Junction, CO, to Beaver, UT, at 65-70 mph. The worst number - from Las Vegas, NV, to San Bernardino, CA, where my speedo needle rarely went under 85 mark (80 true, against some opposing wind).

I believe Ho and John reported seeing 20mpg on the way from Truckhaven to LA area, when Jeff B paced them at 55mph.

so, keep your right foot off the thin pedal if you want to save gas, and don't bother with gimmicks.

That's right Peter. Hang with us Series guys and see your MPG skyrocket... You also get to enjoy all the fun hand gestures from people passing you by... ;-)

I just put in new NGK's and 8MM wires on our D1. the old plugs were ugly (probably original). The wires were just OK. I will watch the next few tanks and see what happens.

Jeff, nothing beats 2.25. I'm positive about that :)

speaking of fun gestures... last night i went out to burn off a lil'more of diesel fuel i put in the jeep 8 mo ago... couldn't go very fast, you see. some dude on the on-ramp flashed his headlights behind me, so i floored it. must have burned a quart in a second - couldn't see his headlighs for a short while behind that cloud of smoke. that's our secret weapon!

Yeah Jeff, the coilers mileage might improve but too bad our mileage still sucks ;-) I have gotten 21-22mpg with my Rover a few times but not very often.

21~22MPG out of your Series? I'm impressed. Freewheel hubs on it?

I can get 15~16MPG on long trips. The rag top doesn't help I'm sure and either does the standard hubs.

When the Disco's and D90's caravan with me, they get about 20MPG or so, but the trips can take longer... ;-)

Yeah, it only happened once or twice when I had the old Solex on it. Freewheel hubs were locked. BFG MT tires. Safari top. Actually I even had roof bars on it. I was driving downt he Annapolis Valley and there must have been a tail wind because it was just too good. Mind you, I got the same on the way back. Truck must just have been happy about going to the Moose Trophy.
