Wow, My mpg post got a quick responds, I guess Ill try another one. Any ham radio operators with HF gear in their discovery? Any problems with vehicle generated noise, fuel pump, ECM, ABS? I have a stack of radio's ( http://www.k2bj.com/images/Photos/MOTM/sanders_3.jpg )to put in my vehicle and need an RF friendly vehicle. What and where have you mounted HF antennas? What about VHF/UHF antenna? Oh heck one more Q. Anyone purchase the radio consoles from console supply out of Austrailia? http://webpages.f1.net.au/consoles/ If so How was the quality? |

I've got a Yaesu FT-817 in the front of my DII, a 2m/440 amp under the front passenger seat, and a 2m Radio Shack HTX-252 in the back (for an APRS tracker). All of the above only needed some ferrite beads around the power lines to work great. Sometime later, I will be running a dedicated power line from the battery for delicate electonics, but it'll be for power reasons, as noise isn't too much of a problem. I did need to take special care of my inverter, as it puts out noise on 6m, and my USB-Serial cable. Both of these just got more ferrite, and loops in the cables. For mounting, I constructed a special mount. A piece of sheet steel across the roof rails, bolted to LR cross-beams, which I drilled mounting holes to. I didn't think the aluminum would hold well, or provide a good ground plane. I'm studying for my general license now, and I'll probably put a screwdriver type antenna onto an aftermarket rear bumper. Oh, one last thing: The ETC system does cause noise when it's working. Lots of it, but it affected the 11m (cb) band the most. -Erik G. Burrows KG6HEA |

Well, other than the disco part I am a ham radio operator with HF gear though. I currently move my FT-840 in and out of my car for now and using magmounts. Since I'm out of LA I tend to use 2M and 440 more and when I go on road trips I use HF more. No hum off of HF or VHF/UHF with power cords running directly to the battery. I plan on getting a disco soon and from that point on can I start putting antennas on it. 73s, Joey Chong, KE6VFA (working on the Extra) |

Damn Gary, thems a lot of radios! I see an Icom 706, an old Kenwood, and two who-knows-whats. I have run the 706 and an D707A in my D2 with no adverse results. Make sure to wire a fused connection direct to the batter. Do not tap off any other power source if you want the cleanest power. Good Luck & 73's, Curtis KD7MMK |

Gary, I have an Icom706MkIIG in my D1. It works great. I have dual batteries with an isolator, so I can run the rig on HF with little to no noise. For VHF/UHF I have a diamond dual band 2m/70cm antenna mounted on the spare tire carrier. For HF, I have the AH4 auto tuner loading up a 102" S/S whip, which is mounted on a custom antenna mount (see my write up in the tech section on this web site under "M1 Antenna bracket"). What's up with the 706 AND all other rigs in your photo? You must do some serious mobile operating! 73, Dave WD6EBC |

Curtis/Dave, Thats an old photo also. I have a few more in the truck now. The radio's are a Dual band kenwood, 706, A CM-10 CB, tk-805D UHF commercial radio. I have upgraded the 706 to a mkIIG, the 805 has been replaced with a tk-860 commerical UHF, for GMRS, uhf ham. I have added a TK-760 VHF commercial for MURS and ham use. The CM-10 was replaced with a SSB CB. I have ready to go in a uniden 870 trunk tracking scanner if I dont get the disco soon. I am still trying to find room for the doppler tracking system and APRS reporting station. - I have a couple of hrs/day in my truck commuting so do A lot of Radio work mobile. |

Gary, For your APRS reporting station, look into the Kenwood TM-D700A. I said I had the 707, but that was a brain fart on my part. I am tickled pink with the D700. I actually sold my 706 to pay for it. I do very little HF so the 706 was pretty much a novelty. Curtis KD7MMK |

Curtis,, Th D700 is nice but way to much money to just report your location. I am looking at sticking the radio off in a corner and will never seeing it again. I have an old tempo handheld for the aprs task. |

Gary: I'm just curious. How did you mount your four rigs? I was looking over your picture again of your set up and I realized that I could not see the gear-selector-shift-knob-what-cham-ma-call-it. Does your radio mount slide out of the way? |
