This probably sounds like a stupid question to you seasoned Auto 'box guys in the US, but...We don't get that many Auto's in the UK, in fact the Disco is my first Auto. I've driven other Auto's, but not for more than a day or so. Hence, I'm not experienced driving them long term.

What's the general concensus on what's best to do when stopping for say 30secs or more at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.....

1) Leave it in gear and hold it back with the foot brake.

2) Stick it in Neutral and either use the foot or hand brake to stop rolling (if necessary) [I can't be arsed to go all the way to 'P' !!]

I guess what I'm getting at is that using (1) the truck is constantly under strain - engine, gearbox, brakes... But, using (2) does the more frequent shifting between 'D' and 'N' cause more problems over a longer period ? Or does it not make any difference either way ?

Any comments appreciated - On the subject preferably - However, if you wish to insult me, I would prefer the insult to include a good measure of sarcasm. Either that, or some of those amusing pictures.

Thanks

Matt

matt, go with whatever feels good, the tranny should be able to stay in 'd" (i use "3" more in town) without any problems unless there is something wrong with it or the cooling system. imho

Matt,

I was the same way when I first moved from the UK to the US. Also I kept trying to balance the brake the same way as you would a clutch. Duh!

Anyway, I tend to agree with Mike, whatever feels good. If I'm at trffic lights I tend to just leave the truck in "D" and hold it with the brakes, however if I'm in heavy stand still traffic I would knock it into "N" or "P" for longer periods.

Other cars I've had over here don't like being held on the brake in hot weather rush hour, but you won't have that problem will you. Just kidding.

Hope this helps, Jon

Matt,

no worries, you can keep the engine spinning and tranny in gear until you run out of gas. Some people here in SoCal spend several years of their lives sitting in traffic, most of it with autoboxes in "D."

Personally, when the traffic gets very heavy but still moving, I use low range + 1st gear, and just as much brakes as not to run over a honda civic or ferrari in front of me.

Matt: one extra thought, when stopping and parking, place truck into neutral, then apply handbrake and allow handbrake to take the strain before before moving lever to park.
Keeps the strain off the box

No, it locks the driveshaft behind the t-case, look underneath, you will see the big drum brake connected to the rear shaft.

I stand corrected. I know exactly what you are talking about now, without even looking. Thanks, sorry for the mis-information.
