Hi looking into getting my first Discovery ( 96 SD w/ 65k). Does anybody keep track of the costs to maintain these fine trucks on an annual basis. I do know they aint cheap to fix. Just want to make sure I am not going over my head. Thanks in advance. The particular car I am looking at needs brakes ( according to the current owner ) He told me this job alone ( pads, rotors and cleaning the abs sensors would run appx 1400 at the dealer and about 800 at an independent garage. Is this true. Please advise. Thanks again |

You can save yourself a lot of money by maintaning your truck yourself. Get a manual, and ask questions on this site. |

pads are a piece of cake - not sure about the rotors / cleaning abs sensors. These trucks can be very expensive to maintain. You could always buy an aftermarket warranty for piece of mind but this will not pay normal wear and tear like the brakes. At minimum I would get the VIN # and do your due diligence. Most importantly check to see if it has had a valve job. Big bucks and from what I have read the 96 has a problem with this. Good luck. SG - 2000 DII |

I Am new (8 mos) mechanic of a '97 D1. (wife is driver). I had the same fears. In over my head. Mechanics with 150 k mortgages. Weird electical problems... I had done water pumps, brake jobs, shocks, tune ups, starters, bolt on work, on Fords my entire career (+20 yrs, sigh) I would not have bought the disco without this experience. Go to one of the many parts suppliers on the web and look at the cost of Rotors, pads, etc... My Costs? Tranny filter & gasket LR-$50 +/- 90 mile drive F150-16$ Joes Auto Dashboard Lights LR $3 Mail order F150 .80 at Joe's Auto Oil Filter - Same$ - Joes Auto Gas Filter - Same$ - Joes Auto Lower Radiator Hose LR 50$+ - 90 miles or Mail order F150 - 20$ Joes Auto Special order Parts seem to cost 3X as much as domestic. BUT the do it myself times on the rover are LESS then the F150 About 1/2 to 2/3 the time. And LR seems to require less Special Tools. Can you do it? Yes you can. It is not complicated, just do not give up. And make sure you have a running vehicle available when the rover is on the jackstands and you realise you need a 12" x 3/8" ratchet extension or some oddball 56 mm deepwall socket. Look around the tech sections of EE or Discoweb. If you feel up to it, go ahead jump in. I'm glad I did. SteveCz |
