I have a tapping noise coming from the engine of my '95 Disco. The dealer told me I needed to replace the cam button. Can anyone tell me what the cam button does and how to replace it? Thanks |

Cam button keeps the camshaft from "walking" back and forth in it's bore. Common 3.9 issue BTW Frankly, while it may be annoyiing, especially at idle, it isn't hurting anything. If you really want to get in there anyway, might as well replace the camshaft on a 95 while you're at it. Bill |

Don't forget this engine is based in large part on an old buick V8 so good old boys can often fix it too and for alot less and without the blinders the dealer sometimes wears. Just something to consider. |

If it's cam walk, it's probably more of an annoyance than a serious problem. Is your Disco a mid year '95 model? If so, cam walk shouldn't even be an issue. If you have the serpentine belt instead of the v-belts, you most likely have a mid-year "B" suffix 3.9 motor (check for a "B" at the end of your engine serial #), which has a cam thrust plate on the block and a peg on the inside of the front cover/oil pump that should have eliminated that problem. If you have an earlier 3.9 motor, I think they did have a nylon "cam button" retrofit (stuck onto the inside of the front cover, I believe) that supposedly fixed the problem, at least temporarily. I think there's a service bulletin for that which can probably be found on Alldata.com. ---Norm |

How does one go about doing such a thing as replacing this "cam button" as my '94 makes a similar noise..and its rather curious.. |

Where do you find the engine serial # on a 95' to insure the proper suffix #, that correlates with the cam walk? I have looked and can't seem to find it. |

Thanks Craig, Took a look, and I do not have the B suffix at the end of the serial #. I guess that I now know what is causing that annoying ticking noise in the top end of my engine. P.S. What would I do without Disco-Web |

OOOPS! Well spoke to soon, I do have a B suffix at the end of my engine serial #. I guess I'm back to the drawing board. (I also have a ticking in the top end of my engine, Any suggestions on what it my be?) |

Well Curtis- my 94 needs rockers in a bad way. I can't keep enough of them in stock. It's really hard to say though. I'm sure some others will chime in tomorrow. good luck Craig |

Go through the "engine noises" section of your factory service manual. If you can't find the culprit, either get ear plugs, a loud stereo or a new 4.6. ---Norm |

Just got back from the Land Rover dealer...here's the info on the cam button. The cam button fixes the camshaft knock in 94 & 95 Disco's up to serial LJ137600 (serpentine belt drive systems). Here is the procedure to diagnose it per Land Rover technical information document: "engine must reach normal operating temp. Run engine at approx. 2000rpm for 2-3 minutes to ensure lifters are properly primed. FInally allow engine to idle. It is necessary to remove the drive belt & run engine briefly to assist in diagnosis. If the knocking/tapping noise is eliminated when the belt is removed then the noise is being generated from the ancillary drive system, & not the camshaft." If not, it is most likely in the camshaft. They also gave me the procedure to replace it...if anyone is interested i can e-mail it to you. E-Mial me at [email protected] |
