what type of problems will a quarter size hole in my muffler cause?

heat escape will fry wires at the point where the escaping exhaust heat contacts the body/ frame. Just buy some muffler patch tape or replace.

Depends on where it is... Why dont ya weld a quarter over it for a patch ?? :)

In addition to JB's suggestion of muffler patch, a product called J B WELD works wonders on small holes in exhausts. We started using it at work on equipment exhaust as a field repair. It never wore out where the dammage was caused by a puncture or other impact. Where larger holes are involved, we will reinforce it with fiberglass webbing. I don't think it would work on manifolds, too hot, but on exhaust pipes, mufflers and tailpipes it's been great. It works so well, we always try it first now before tearing the equipment down.
