Maybe you can help me figure this out. With my truck stationary, if I turn my wheel from side-to-side, I hear alot of creaking and moaning from the front end. I had someone do this while I was under the front, and I couldn't really isolate where the noises were coming from. While driving, I hear the same sounds, and ocassionally when rounding a corner, I will hear what sounds like a spring popping into place. It's annoying as hell and has been doing this intermittantly since the springs were installed. For a while they were quiet (coincendentally during the winter?), but now they are very noisey again. In the rear, I had drop cones installed. Originally they contacted the springs and were also very noisey, so I ground down the sides so no contact was being made. Everything was fine. Then about a month ago I started hearing the creaking from the rear again. I sold the cones, and have replaced the rear Ranchos w/ factory shocks, thinking the Ranchos (because the bushings were not the correct size for the factory bolts) were also contributing to the noise. So all I have in the rear that's not factory are my springs. They creak and moan like never before. WTF? My truck sounds like it's going to fall apart. This weekend I will install OME springs (that I borrowed from a friend) up front to see if that helps, and will reinstall factory shocks to see if the Ranchos are part of the problem up front. I am VERY close to saying to hell with it and going back stock, except I need heavier springs up front because of my winch and bumper. Help!!! |

I hear a popping noise sometimes also when I roll to a stop and then when I go again. Drives me nuts. Anyone know a solution?? |

Yep, I've got that as well. If I was driving a beater or something, I could live with it. But in a fairly "new" vehicle, it sounds like shit. |

Greg, did all this begin soon after that scruffy bumper was installed Man, I better chase down that other thread. As far as pops go in the front end, check the radius arm bolts and bushings. I had a loose radius arm bolt that had to be replaced because the thread had been ruined after sitting loose for so long. The loud pop and shift in the front end was eliminated after replacing the bolt. |

Moe, this actually started BEFORE my bumper. Anyway, I have checked all of the bolts, including the radius arm bolts. All are tight. I did find two radius arm bolts loose on the rear D/S, but no noise was coming from there. Oh well. It has been suggested that I place shims under the spring pads to get them level again. They are no longer parallel with the bottom of the springs due to the lift and no corrected arms. I'll at least give it a shot. |

You might want to pull those bolts and make sure they really are in good condition. If you checked the radius arm bolts, then you proabably checked the panhard too. I noticed improvement in the front end when I replaced those bushings. If you think it is related to the springs not seating properly because the seat is no longer level, try twisting the springs so the last coil terminates on the front half of the spring seat. That might help a little. Otherwise have you checked the brakes. On a different topic, I am not responding to your last comment on your bumper thread after seeing the latest window item. Those ARBs need some work before they are ready for the chicken challenge http://www.discoweb.org/farmington/DSC00109.JPG |

Moe, thanks for the tips again. Good idea about rotating the springs. How would the brakes contribute to the noises? Just curious, since I have cleared it through the boss to have a "Rover" day tomorrow to try and get all this crap sorted out. As far as the latest item out the window, I saw that, but I'm not one to say "I told ya so". I did check the panhard. It was a little loose (1/2 turn). I've got 42K miles. Should the bushings need replacing already? |

"I told ya so" is my favorite line too. Goes over real well with my partner Some on the board here mentioned fixing front end 'clacks' in reference to brakes--loose caliper bolts and worn or missing pad retaining clips/pins. Yes, I realize you don't have the clack, and pop and moan is more of the issue Does anyone reading the thread have ideas on why Greg's frontend is moaning? |
