While driving, not braking, my brakes are squeaking. It does not happen all the time, but is pretty consistent. It is like the brakes are not completely disengaged or maybe the rotor is warped. It is really annoying, especially with the windows down. Has anybody had a similar situation? Thanks! Jeremy |

Have you driven through some thick mud? Sometimes mud can get on your brake pistons, get compressed, and prevent the piston from retracting fully when you take your foot off the brake. |

Mine started doing the same thing about 2 months ago. I traced it down to a very slight leak in the piston seals. Look for any signs of a leak at the bottom the pistons for this. Mine was just a little damp but was enough to go into the pads themselves and cause the noise(level went down about 3mm over 2 months on the brake fluid). When you are drving press on the brakes slightly and see if the squeek goes away. If it does then you might be looking at the same problem. The fix is to replace the seals (about $6 for the seals alone if I am correct) but I have not decided if I will just go ahead and rebuild the calipers while I am at it or not. DonC 96SE7 |

Is it a chirping sound? If it is, it may be a u-joint getting ready to go. |

When was the last time the pads where replaced? If it has been a while, you may just need to replace the suckers. At the end of a brake pads life they wear down to a type of metal mesh material that causes a similar sound, this is just a warning that they are ready to be changed. I'm not trying to undermine your ability, but I find it's easier to start simple and work your way up. |

If/when you replace the pads, affix some backing stickems: anti-noise pads on backside of each pad. The vibration set up by ever-so-slight contact, and ever-so-slight out of round conditions of your rotors, cause the vibration. It's very high frequency, and the anti-squeel PADS,(not paste)is the cure. |
