I have a problem with my Disco ('97 SE7, 91,400 miles), that I hope someone on this board can help me with.
Background: I only drive the truck on weekends, so it sits around a lot. The first time I start it, it starts right up. Smooth idle, only turns over once or twice, it's like a dream.
This weekend, however, it started ok the first time, but when I parked it and let it sit for about 20 minutes, it started very rough. It idles at about 400 rpm, has very little power, and seems right on the verge of stalling. I managed to get it backed out and into gear, but it was still very sluggish. When it got up to about 20mph, it backfired several times, tripped the check engine light, then slowly smoothed out and drove normally. The rest of the trip was uneventful.
This only happens when the engine is at operating temp. When the engine is cold, it starts perfectly.
Has anyone had this happen? What do I need to replace?
Thank you!

Maybe engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS), not functioning correctly and thus thinking engine is cold and running the engine supper rich, causing starting problems, and backfiring.

Same thing was happening to me, replaced ECTS and all was well, hope yours will be as easy as this.

Could also be O2 sensors.

I have the same problem currently Matthew, but no back fire or check engine light. This is on a 95 with 95,000 miles. Hopefully someone can chime in here. Oh, and it really only happens in warmer weather, did this last summer, and now that we have 90 degree weather, starting to do it again, but didn't during winter. Thanks.

Just read your post AlanB. Replaced my coolant temp sensor about 6 mo ago with one from Discount Rovers (Nathan).

The coolant temp sensor can be checked w/DVOM.
Depends on ambiant temp, which varies the reading. The svc manual lists the specs. (don't have it at hand) but it is on many places on the 'net. Better than tossin' parts at it.
