I've been told by some people that engaging the CDL on a Disco 2 cancels HDC and ETC. But I thought I had also heard that it only cancels when the diff is locked before the ignition is turned on. If it's locked once the truck is running it doesn't affect ETC and HDC. Can anybody confirm this, or have I got it all bass-ackwards? Thanks. |

...basically so I'll know before I throw all kinds of time and money into putting the Disco 1 shifter on. |

If the CDL is engaged before the engine is started, upon startup the computer will sense the diff has been locked and will disable the ABS/ETC features. This check is only done upon startup. Therefore, if you engage the CDL after the engine has been started, the computer will not know it has been locked and the ABS/ETC will still be operational. Get it done. It's one of the most performance enhancing mods that you can make to a DSII. |

Greg, The weird thing is, when I was driving (unknowingly) for so long with the center diff locked, I'm certain that my ETC and ABS was still working (the sensor did not work either). I'm still scratching my head about this. My dealership says they tested all of the 01's and up, and the sensors would not work on them either ... I dunno. I'm sorry, I forgot what year you have ... Do you know anyone with an '01 that has modified their CDL? ... (as in, you've seen firsthand) Last time I took it offroad, I was finally able to test it with center diff unlocked, climbing more challenging hills and so forth ... I made it okay, but boy what a difference! After I'm finished with the darn house, (grrrrrr) first thing on the to do list is the center diff (then bumper ) I'm wondering if my ETC and ABS will stay engaged if I leave it locked, and turn the ignition off & on ... I guess only one way to tell ...? Kim |

P. S. I know you're all thinking what a stupid chick (!!!) to drive for so long with diff locked and not know it, but (please??, LOL) give me a break ... It was locked when it was practically brand new, and I am used to driving beater 4X4's ... I just assumed it was the way the truck handled ... I mentioned something about the turning radius to my husband (a different Greg, LOL) and of course, he blew me off. He truly did not drive the truck that much, it wasn't until he drove it to LA on a weekend and was driving around with John Lee that I got a phone call (man, was my face red, I didn't know what they were talking about). They suspected there was somethingg wrong with a diff ... then when I took it in, the dealership said it was my rear diff, and replaced it. A full month later, Greg's driving, and says WTF? ... I did feel stupid for not noticing, but ... Kim I don't know why I confess all these things, but my inquiring mind wants to know ... |

Yeah, the sensor doesn't seem to be full-proof. I've had my CDL engaged without any lights also. Your tires will usually let you know if it's engaged though. chu |

Chu, Your is a 2000 right? Mine is and I have always had the indicator lights work. I guess there is always time for that to change. Curtis |

LOL, as far as the tires go, I do indeed now know the difference. Thanks for the sensor info, Chu. I'm curious, what about your ETC & ABS ... Does it remain engaged, if you start the engine with the CD locked? Thanks, Kim (that would be pretty cool if we find out that it does ) |

All, If you start the car with the center diff already locked, the ABS and ETC lights come on, ABS still works, but ETC does not. To get ETC back, unlock, turn the car off then back on, then you can lock and you'll have ETC w/CDL. A pretty amazing combo. |

Further to the above. It is possible to "electronically" fool the ETC into believing the CDL is unlocked. Disco2.com has a complete tech page on this subject. Cheers, Russell |

Kim, mine's a '00. Sounds like on the newer vehicles like yours, the sensor may have been deleted. Because of that, the computer would not have known you were locked, thereby leaving ABS/ETC intact. Just a guess. And like Ho said, after seeing those pics of you on that white Defender, we'll forgive you for ANYTHING you do! |

Hey All, I had a problem with switch for the cdl, it was intermittent. Sometimes it would light, other times it wouldn't. I took to in and after getting a lenghty (is that a word) speech on how I just voided my drivetrain warranty(not true, had water in both diffs's and they paid for my TT's), they replaced the wiring harness/senor and I haven't had a problem since...after the fact, had my truck for a pulley problem/safety recall and the NEW service manager is loking to buying several CDL set-up's for customers how want them... Frank, That is great to hear that Torston took care of those diffs. I think I need to get my front diff checked for water intrusion. My rear TT is great, but it needs company. I do hope that Torston was clear with you on the warranty issue though: It does not void any warranty, but the diffs themselves are now only covered by TruTracs warranty and not LRs. If a dealer wanted to be a PITA they could argue that the stress of the TTs broke upline or downline components, but that would likely be hard to prove. I think you said you have a good dealer in NY though. If not, then it would be a good excuse to come back to Utah Curtis |

Hey Curtis, I should be back in SLC in 2 weeks, i'll give a call when I get in. As for the warranty, you're right, LR will cover anything stock, if the TT's go, then it's under thiers. The Centerville guys were great, I wish my local LR were that good! Frank |

Getting back late... Don't get me wrong, the lights come on everytime I engage it and go off when it's disengaged now that I have a better set up. Before, I've used flimsy plastic pieces to engage/disengage, and there's probably a little play where the sensor thinks it's disengaged, even though it hasn't done so mechanically. I still hope my CDL even works. It's definitely been a while. |
