Anyone know of a good PS pump replacement or a bolt in dedicated clutch pulley pump to use with a MM winch set up? Something other that the PTO approach.

Just run away from it as fast as you can...... After doing a Bumper for Findlay's MM I have really grown to hate them....... :)

http://www.4x4winches.com/zf.html. I checked this option out last fall. In short, this is what you have to do:

-Install higher psi pump
-Install a relief valve before the steering box to lower pressure going to the box.
- Swap out the motor in the winch for a smaller volume motor

In theory, this will give you a 9500lb. winch. I ordered this setup from them last fall but never received it. I might try again soon.

Kyle, give us some details on why you hate the MM.

The canuck should be back at home on the sunshine coast by now . I am surprised he hasnt spoke up. The Mile Marker is the same all all the other little planetaries. "Plastic and rust" :)

plastic and rust?

they must have changed something?

I have three

none have any plastic anywhere

and as far as rust goes...mine has none and it faces the salty roads of chicago all the time

Yeah Im back on the sunshine coast, but busy. Here's the lowdown. The winch is really two pieces, the one part is the hydraulic moter, wich will work like an ox with the right setup and is sealed and all that jazz and wounderfull etc, etc. the other end of the winch, the part that has the levers, is basically a cap that you can pull off, and inside is some planetery gears. This end is protected from the elements by an o'ring gasket, and it does have a nylon washer. This means that in my case this part was rusted to shit, dry as a bone, and the nylon washer was broken. So the sealed part of the winch is not the whole story.

The good part is the fucker still works, outpulls and is now bolted on real well to handle the true pull of a real winch. hehehe, seriously this was total ignorance on my part, and now I know that that end of the winch needs service and attention, unlike what I originaly believed. Not a huge deal when you know about it.

Kyle hates it more because when installing the lines were bleeding all over him and making a mess :-).

Bottom line is the winch is similar in build quality and maintenance as other planetary winches, but the hydraulic motor is still bullet proof, and will pull you out of the real shit, and will withstand true abuse and neglect, like being riped off it's mount and twisted, ignored for 3 years on dry gears and leaky orings etc, etc.

When is the last time you pulled it apart Musky ? In MM's defense , their planet gears are beefier then most of the little smokers I have been inside. Aside from that thought its just the same ole shit with a bad ass motor bolted to it. That in itself opens the door for other issues... Its just not as sturdy and maintenance free as I like to see them. Oil baithed and sealed is the way to go , not grease packed.........
And yes , that damn thing bleeding all over brings back painfull memories of Timberjacks and sub zero weather........ :) Glad to see you made it Canuck.....

>>-Install higher psi pump

>>- Swap out the motor in the winch for a smaller volume motor

Sorry to nitpick over terminology, (if that is the issue) but it seems to me that you would want a pump that would sustain a higher flow rate at the rated pressure and not a higher pressure pump. Then you don't need the pressure regulator in front of the power assist unit and you have plenty of flow for the winch motor. A smaller flow motor has less torque, since torque is proportional to volumetric flow rate, and that does not really seem desireable.

As a mechanical engineer with some hydraulics experience but not winches in particular, that makes more intuitive sense to me. If the pump can maintain the flow rate without working hard it should last forever. The one concern I do have is that an inline filter for the fluid probably makes sense with the addition of a motor to the system. A little bit of grit in the fluid and the motors eat themselves up. The failure rate is exponential once it starts because the newly eroded particles increase the rate of erosion.

Do either of these systems have a filter included? or available as an option?

cheers

Jeff: Here's the answer. The LR ps pump has an output of ~1000 psi. The 9000 MM is rated as such at 1500 psi. To get 9000# pull, obviously, you need a higher psi pump, not just more flow rate. The higher rated pump makes about 1800 psi, so that's why you install the lower volume motor so everything ends up making about 9000-9500# stall.

Again, this is all theoretical as I never received the pump.

Have you ever looked at this site for milemarker pieces? http://www.winchesplus.com/

They sell a Saginaw hydraulic pump that has good specs and local availability. I am not sure how difficult it would be to mount it, just from looking at it.

just pulled the one on my "tug" last night after reading this.

still no sign of plastic?

mine has the old style handles to flip it in and out of engagement, so maybe the did replace the brass with a nylon washer?

if you havent ever heard of it. I use a product called tri-flo on my winch all the time

I got onto it 20 years ago on the quick disconects on snow plows it gets in all the nooks and cranies and prevents rust and sticking.

I dous the whole damn thing all the time just as a matter of course when I check and change fluids. The tri-flo does seal water outa stuff really well it has a very strong film strength and use of it will help the workings of all kinds of mechanical gadgets

I'v been living on the salty roads of the midwest all my life and have a very proactive mindset. that might be why I havent had problems even with a ton of use. then again use anything alot and it will always work better. leave something sit and it will begin to have issues.

one of my lazy buddies with a MM never does anything and we do struggle with his engagement knobs every time we use his winch.

I'v got a MM on the garage floor waiting to go on the disco. when I do the install I'll do a pic by pic I'm planning on doing a aux. pump so it should rock.
