By my rough calculations, my Goodyear MT/Rs should last approximately 56,000 miles. Granted it is based on pure theory, but hopefully this serve as some sort of guideline on how long we can expect the new MT/Rs to last on our vehicles.

Here is how I arrived at the estimate:
1. I measured the spare tread depth at 18/32.
2. I measured all tires at various spots and the tread depth read a consistant 16.5/32. I used 16 as a more conservative number.
3. I have traveled approximately 7,000 miles on the tires since new; mostly long highway trips and off-roading. I live in Florida and the tires have been on the vehicle about 11 months.
4. I assumed the tires would be 'toast' with at 2/32s of tread life. That give the tires 16/32 (1/2 inch) of treadlife.
5. Calculation: Used Tread (2/32) / Miles Traveled (7000) = Total Usable Tread (18/32 - 2/32 = 16/32)/Estimated Tire Life.
6. Estimated tread life: 56,000 miles!

Granted these are theoretical numbers, but it's the best method I could think of to produce an estimated tread life for the tires. I've been pretty worried about how long these tires will last (they ain't cheap!). I don't really expect to get 56,000 miles from the tires, but I would be very happy with 45,000 miles.

Feel free to critique my methods.

Thanks,
Mike B.

THey probably will last that long but I bet off-road they're effectivenes will be diminished quite a bit once they get past the 50% mark. I would try to sell them then and use the money against a new set. New set of tires every 2-3 years does not sound too bad does it? I know that I would like to try something new every year but that's a bit expensive.

I have about 1k miles on mine and love them so far. I am very happy to hear that I may get 50k out of them. I have kept my factory set to use for long trips to help save them.

I got 15K on mine and there is only a tiny tiny.. ( i didnt have a ruler ) difference in tread depth from my untouched spare..

I am truly suprised at how these are holding up. I agree with Milan's theory though, on ditching em at 50% tread so that you can still get decent $$$ for them and getting a new (bigger) set. =)

Tire life for me, depends on rotatition. If you rotate your tires a lot(8000 to 10000 miles), they will last. I put 83,000 miles on my BFG AT. If they start to "cup" or "chop" you have gone to far. You need to rotate before you notice this on your tires.
This is what I have found, it work great for me.

if only it was this simple

because of heat curring and solvent evaporation tread blocks are never the same hardness and consistancy from start to burned

Goodyear always wear nice at first then go all to hell when you hit the softer underlying material

then the blocks turn all sorts of shapes.

also as the shocks and suspension bushings wear the tire wear gets accelerated to a much higher rate so they will wear at different rates on different trucks

what about rotation?

trust me 2/32 is so balled you will have crashed on a wet road before you get there on a mud tire

just keep inspecting them , I hate to be a downer but I think your crytal ball methed is what you called it

Are you running these on a D2? If so, what size and do you have a stock suspension? Any rubbing?

I have 20K on my 245/75/16 and don't have enough wear to be able to measure yet but I have always run GoodYear Wrangler AT on my F150 and they wore really nice the first 30K and went away really fast the last 10K. I think these will do something similar but I really think the Disco is easier on tires than that big F-150 was.

Just my 2 cents

I have them on a DII, but I have a lift. Rovertym 2" with GY 235/85-16 MT/R. I love the combination.

Thanks to everyone for replies. Interesting note on the tires wearing faster later on in life. That makes sense. I guess I had better start bugeting for my next set. I'm glad I kept my stock XPCs. I'll put the XPCs for the trip up and back to the Uwharrie Safari and change to the MT/Rs when I get there.

tired:
I have a 98 Disco 1 with 245/75/R16s. I have lots of pictures on www.discocrazy.org. I don't know much about tire sizes for DIIs.
