Nobody makes vented, slotted and cross-drilled rotors for a D1...right? I've seen the slotted and cross-drilled rotors that a few places sell, but nothing vented. In the archives, there was something mentioned about using Range Rover Classic rotors and using spacers or ??? to get them to work within the narrow D1 calipers, but there wasn't enough info to describe this or how to go about performing the modifications. Can you use the performance rotors intended for the RR Classic with the pads sold by Bearmach (and others...) in the Disco calipers? |

check out www.rpiv8.com I believe they have a conversion kit. |

I saw the RPi kit...it's a little spendy at around $700 or more for one axle. What's the deal with the Bearmach rotors? Their vented rotors listed for the Disco cross-reference with the stock RR Classic rotors. Is this a mistake? If not, why doesn't any of the other US parts distributors touch on this? Liability? |

You need the calipers off a 90-95 RR or a D90 Then the rotors go on. zeus makes a kit too. It is just spacers not new calipers so it should be cheaper. I have been meaning to check and see if they would just sell the spacers as shipping the rotors from the UK would be spendy when you can get them for 60 in the US. If the disco needs rotors for inspection then I will find out. Otherwise it can wait. Ron |

Ron, Are the 90-95 RR calipers a bolt on? I'd imagine I would need the ABS compatible ones... I'll check out the Zeus conversion kit! |

My understanding is that they are a bolt on however since I have not done it I can't tell you for sure. It is my understanding that they are the same as disco calipers except they have spacers in between the two halfs and two brake lines. ALMOST all 90-95 RRCs are ABS and thus would have vented rotors. The catch is that you have to do ONE of three things to make it work. 1. Machine the caliper to join the two ports (RRCs have two front brake lines per caliper) 2. Run a T-fitting and two flex lines 2. Rebuild the disco calipers you have using the RRC spacers. Due to this I am leaning toward the zeus kit. But like I said if it does not need front rotors for inspection it can wait a year. Ron |

This doesn't apply directly, but did put 93 RRC ABS calipers and rotors (actually entire swivels and axels) on an 87 RRC which had the solid front discs like our Discos. It was easier on the RR because they all had 2 front brake lines like Ron mentioned, but the caliper mountings are the same for Disco or RRC. Only fabricating was to make new brackets to hold the brake lines. Results were very good, even though pedal is stil a bit spongy (will bleed again after new lines come) - the braking was considerably improved with the vented front discs - BTW, these were stock RRC rotors, not drilled or slotted or any of that crap. Bill and Ron, thanks for the info. Bill, keep me posted on spongy feeling; let me know if it goes away after bleeding. I'm wondering if there is a difference in the pistons between the two calipers that may require a different master cylinder to eliminate the sponginess...but let us know after bleeding! |

My life is spongy brakes with Rovers - I just live with it now....... Bill BTW - pistons are the same, calipers are essentially the same - just have a spacer to make them wider to accomodate the vented rotors. Only diff in RRC vs Disco is one line vs. two. Bill |

BTW D90s calipers would be ideal as they are only one line but are wider for vented rotors Ron |

Checked out Autoland 4x4 on this, and this is copy of their reply: "Autoland 4x4service" "We can supply the calliper modification kit at a price of £60.00 plus appropriate shipping." Seems far cheaper than the Zeus kit, but then I don't know which quality rotors they supply. Autoland is spacers, o-rings and bolts only (i.e. you have to add the rotors and pads and retention set). At that price, it seems a reasonable option rebuilding the calipers into vented ones next time renewing rotors. BTW: You should rebuild the seals and pistons while calipers are splitted. Just read in the manual those seals are supposed to be renewed at 6 years!!!! Roverly Yours, Frode |

Is there anyway to get bigger calipers on there? Are the rangie or d90 pads any bigger? I can understand a great reduction in break fade, maybe longer lasting rotors and less warpage. But my concern would the stopping distance be shortened by a decent amount? |

Al, would the question be whether LR made bigger calipers for other models that would bolt on? I know that one of the RPi kits (the expensive one) uses AlCon 6-piston calipers. I tried searching Brembo's web-site, but they don't have a category for Land Rover...I still can't imagine they don't make a caliper that would work. |

Al - I think all the pad sizes are the same regardless of vehicle or year (RRC/D1/D90). RRC pads have wear sensors, but otherwise are identical. I think someone on another thread posted some huge price for three piston front calipers though. |

bill, that sucks about the pad sizes. wtf were they thinking all those years? |

i may be pulling at straws here, but what about the brake setup from the 110? They had the same front axle right? are those setup any differently? Ron don't you own a long bus? |

My 110 has an 87 range rover axle on it so that doesn't help. My understanding is that NAS 110s had solid rotors. But non NAS 110s often had vented rotors. Personally i am going to look at the autoland kit. Maybe Nathan can get it? Ron Micheal Slade put wilwood calipers on his range rover so there is another option. pics on pirate4x4.com/forum |

Not sure if I understand what You don't understand, Al. If reusing your old calipers, only with spacers between them, they will fit vented brake discs on your vehicle no problem. Can't see any reason for fitting still bigger calipers, but maybe that's what You want? A main issue for me, would be cost-effectiveness: Rebuilding your old calipers will be a very cost-effective way of improving braking if you're still renewing rotors 'cos they're scored. Should be possible to mail autoland on the address given in earlier posting to check for postage fees. As there's only a few small items in the kit (four spacers, four bolts, four rubber rings...guess that would be it), and you source the big items locally (rotors, new seals, new pads etc), I guess they just put it in an envelope. As for customs I don't know to the US, but I purchase all my stuff from England into Norway. Autolands website isn't that helpful, but here it is: http://www.4x4service.co.uk The Zeus kit also looks great, they have a pretty good reputation (don't know for Autoland), but then you'll have to pay carriage for discs as well, and they're heavy! Can't see any reason for fitting still bigger calipers, but maybe that's what You want It should be what you want too, have you noticed the puny pads that are responsible for stopping your vehicle? I've seen many braking systems, and the rover is by far the worst. The ABS is a joke and the pads are smaller than the ones on my honda accord. Going to a vented disc is a definite plus but it still doesn't cure the problem. A larger pad would slow the vehicle down much faster, although you would need a vented disk to handle the extra heat and a larger caliper to fit the bigger pad. You get it now? |
