We've all heard the issues: ticking, vibes, loss of power, no accelleration! How do you know when it's time for a valve job? What are the signs? I've heard that a lot of dealers try to avoid doing valve jobs under warranty. How can you convince them that you need one without them ocnvincing you that you don't need one and that you only need a 3rd speed transducer in 4 months.

Threaten to call land rover. Bring the truck back everyday and say it is not fixed. Go wander into the bay and talk to a tech and give them the symptoms. Techs like valve jobs as they pay a lot of hours and most of them can do them in their sleep.

But how do you REALLY know when it needs one? I do not have a good mechanic friend nor do I know any. I do not feel comfortable asking some home town mechanic about a LR.

Its not a high-tech machine just a 40 year old Buick V-8 , not too complicated.

I know it's not complicated but I'm curious about the warning signs. How does a mechanic tell or even a novice tell (w/o taking the engine apart) if it needs a valve job?

First, a compression check will indicate the condition of the valves' SEALING surface. It generally points to sticking valve/s too.You want the #'s to be like:
Cyl#1: 158 psi
#2:160
#3:155
#4:161
#5:159
#6:155
#7:157
#8:158 The key points are that pressures are clustered at/near an average that does not vary -never-more than 10%. Better to be clustered within 5-7 psi. More than 10 %: open your wallet. Or sell.
Perfect(if there is such a thing): all cyl pressures are absolutely equal. Never happens even with a careful custom rebuild however.
The 'ticking' of valve-trains is common on D1, too a fault! Which it is. After repairs, I believe one should reprogram the prom so that its' recurring is minimized.
There are other options. I read about several on this site, as sticking valves has been with us for decades, and the marine industry has cures, not involving head removal.
My local race shop does heads for the 3 LR dealers in WA -they always have 3-5 sets in the shop. Always....

Jack; A vacuum gauge shows when a valve stays open. It will flutter (as that cylinders intake valve opens) during the failure to seat properly. You'll have to run the line into the cabin to be able to check it when the problem is felt. A compression test will show the leakage of a valve seat, but if a valve hangs open it will only be seen on the vacuum gauge.

When my valves went bad on my 97 disco, it first started out as a little flutter in the engine at about 70 mph. It would only last a few seconds then would drive fine for a few more months. This happened off and on for a year then..bam serious vibration in the engine.Feels like engine is going to vibrate off the fu..ing truck. $1900 dollars and a valve job later my truck runs great.

Guess what kids? After 5 VSS replacements, the dealer finally said "okay, you need a valve job". The VSS wasn't the issue. Yeah!!!!! Under warranty!!!!!!

Jack:
Well, I guess congrats on the news..
The bad news was you need a valve job..good news, they pay. LUCKEEE !

Once again, remote DISCOWEB diagnosis trumps the local dealer. 5 friggin' sensors ? Unbelieveable.

Start a 'fresh thread' on this news. cheers- doug
