The cloth on the ceiling of my discovery is sagging. On the driver's side windshield, the cloth is hanging so I feel like I am driving with a "curtain" hanging over my head. Help! Is this normal or is this because of the extreme heat that the vehicle is exposed to everyday. The dealer said the repair would cost $1,000. Is there any other way of doing this.

Pat,
You can always take it off-thats what mine looks like, and its actually not that bad. Kinda of spartan looking, so if you bought your disco to have a luxury SUV you may not like it. I had no such illusions so I don't mind.

Yeah, $1,000 bucks! That's what I thought too. How long did it take for them to repair it? How did you find the upholstery shops? Did somebody recommend them to you?

I would definately try a local shop. I think they would be much cheaper than the dealer. They are charging you for an entire headliner assembly. The local upholstery shop will be re-gluing it.

Looks like I'll make a visit to the local upholstery shops. If not, I'll try going Spartan per Ray's advice! Thanks for everyone's help!

2-4 hours and yes the non-dealer shop will just reglue the fabric back to the backing. Look in your local phone book or superpages.com and look under automobile upholstery section

Good luck with trying to reglue the fabric. Please let us know if that works since it is not an uncommon problem. I have had several shops tell me that trying to reglue the fabric will not work, then again never ask a barber if you need a haircut either.

This is a common problem in older Range Rovers. I fixed mine about 3 months ago, with no problems so far. Some thoughts/pointers.

The problem is the foam backing between the fabric and the headliner. You need to get ALL of this off, or it will fall down again. Guess how I know this!

Its probably not worth trying to salvage the old fabric. My wife found me a matching fabric for less than $20. Use a heavy enough fabric that the adhesive won't bleed through. The old pieces make a good pattern, but don't cut the smaller holes until everything's together.

I used a 3M headliner spray adhesive from my local auto parts store. They make one specifically for headliners.

Keep everything absolutely clean when you're working or you'll stain the front side of the fabric.

I had the best luck laying the fabric in, rough cutting the major holes, then spraying the adhesive and pressing the fabric in with a 2" paint roller. Good old duct tape holds the back side.

The whole job took me about 4 hours for a no sunroof Range Rover. The Disco may take a little longer, as there is more to remove. On the other hand, the sunroof holes might make it easier to spread things.

Guys, do a search on the term "headliner" here on DiscoWeb and you'll get lots of info on this topic that I've posted in the last couple of weeks. Yes, the dealer quotes $1000 typically and local upholstery shops charge between $150 and $375 (depending on whether or not you supply some of the labor to do the job). Don't even try regluing the old fabric as you'll screw up the headliner and make a big mess.

Again, do a search and you'll find tons of info.

I have a 95 and I also received some heavy prices on replacing headliners. One day I was walking through the fabric section at Wal-Mart and my wife and I saw a box of Silk Pins. I am from the south and we basically called them sewing pins or fabric pins. Anyway, my wife and I sat in the parking lot and fixed the headliner. I can hardly see the pins. Great fix.

The dealer will charge you 1000 and then take it to a shopo for 200. Pocketing 800.

In miami we have these guys that do it for 80 to 150 dollars and it works. This is a common problem in hot and humid climates. When I bought mine it was a disaster (97) and within a few hours (and $120)good as new. WHY ARE YOU EVEN BOTHERING EITH THE DEALER FOR ANYTHING? Ask your mechanic and I'll bet that he has a friend. Mine does for everything (even painting my patio furniture!)
