I have been driving my 98' Disco since my bimmer has been getting fixed from getting hit a few weeks back. I'm waiting in a long line of traffic in my disco when this POS hundai just slams into me. I lurched forward a little bit and I was kind of stunned. I pulled over to the shoulder and got out only to see that the ladie's car was completely smashed in. The entire hood and front end was gone! I was only imagining how messed up the back of my disco was. I look at the back to see that there was barely any damage whatsoever! The bumper was only bulged a little on top and barely dented. I had to look twice because her hundai was completely destroyed! I watched everyone pass me and stopping to look at the accident. Everyone looked at the hundai and their faces showed they thought someone was definitely hurt bad. Then they would look at the disco and I could tell they were like "What the hell happened, I can't see anything". Nobody was hurt, and her insurance in paying for all the damage. Anyway, just thought I would chime in on how tough these trucks are. I have to sell it though with the bmw payments.

Dan,

I had the same thing happen to me. Driving into Chicago, the traffic all of a sudden stops completely. I did everything right. Checked the cars in front of me, to the sides of me, and then behind me. Behind me a car was rushing towards me doing about 65 or 70. He slammed on his brakes and slammed into me. I got pushed over a lane, thank god missing the cars around me. It was the loudest crunch I have ever heard. When we got to the shoulder, I was ready for the worst. I saw his car before mine and it was completely totaled. It was a compact car. The engine was in the front seat. When I checked out my car, all I had was antifreeze on my hitch. The bumper did not have a dent in it. Before that some chick T-Boned me in the City. More so towards the rear of my car, but there was no damage at all. Her bumper completely fell off. I don't know what's up with the disco, but I feel pretty safe in it.

Yeah i'm in Chicago too. You're right about traffic just coming to a complete stop here. People either drive like animals and slam on their brakes every stop or people drive 5mph the whole time. Now I have to drive a piece of shit loaner car for a few days until i get my other car back. Needless to say i'll be driving the hell out of the thing.

I was driving about a month ago in stop and go traffic on the highway. The traffic was going 55 mph and then stopped hard. I saw a Kia Sephia behind me not stopping so I pulled as far to the left as I could. As I was pulling over and stopping, we ran over a few bumps and I thought that the Kia might have hit me. I asked my wife and she said that she didn't feel anything. As I started to drive again, I saw the KIA pulled over. I stopped and got out and saw that my end cap was dented and my rear bumper light was cracked. Then I saw her car...the hood was curled up like a sardine can, her headlight was smashed and her bumper was hanging. Needless to say, I was VERY happy that we were in the Rover considering my wife was 8 months pregnant at the time! Kia vs Rover = Big Kia Problems!

O.K., here's another one. I was on the freeway, in a 1969 2A 88". Traffic was slowing, except for the guy in a 280Z behind me. I felt a pretty good jolt and expected the worse.
I saw his hood. Hah! a 2' long gash about 3 or 4 inches deep. Real beauty! I kept wondering what hit, cuz I had no damage to anything. The Datsun just left some paint chips on the corner of the frame.
I drove off, he had to call a tow.

Guys, that is the way all rear end accidents end up. It is just more dramatic with a heavier vehicle. I once rear ended an Ford escort with a '82 Civic (dont' flame me yes it was my fault, but was on ice). Guess what nothing wrong with the Escort, my civic had the radiator in the engine.

I had a guy pull up to close to my bumper (at a gas station no less) when I had the bike rack on the back. Completely ruined the air dam on a nice BMW 5 series. No prob with my rack or hitch.

Another one, I was stopped at an intersection behind a Dihatsu when there was this almighty bang and my wife & I found ourselves staring at the ceiling. We had been rear ended by a Suzuki Vitara travelling at 60kph & both front seats collapsed backwards with the impact.

The Suzuki was totalled with the radiator folded back over the block. His grille badge was embedded into my rear bumper & my towball was bent up at 45 degrees. My fuel tank had split & dumped the lot all over the road. Luckily no fire, but a bit of an anxious time while we got everyone out & clear before the firies arrived.

The Dihatsu looked OK with just a cracked rear indicator light, thankfully the driver had her infant strapped into a baby capsule. My front end wasn't too bad, bonnet (hood) buckled, bull bar a bit sad & the grille bent. Apart from the busted fuel tank I could have driven it away.

When the police arrived they estimated the three vehicles had travelled some 10m down the road from the point of impact, this with both stationary vehicles' brakes applied. It was a pretty big hit & the emergency people were amazed that there were no real injuries.

The repairs to my truck cost some A$20k, as a number of panels had been bent/sprung, such as the rear door, both rear quarters, front guard etc. The chassis was bent but pulled out straight.Engine mount split & exhaust system squashed.

Sounds a bit of a mess, but we suffered no injuries apart from bruises from the seat belts and armrests. I'm thankful we were in something as substantial as the truck, it could have been a much different story had we been in the middle in one of the other two types. She performed her primary crash design function & protected the occupants.

Mike, air-cooled VW's don't keep their radiators in the trunk either ;)

PS. That is why I love big trucks... Been rearended twice (once in a 2-door yukon and once in my K-5 blazer) with no damage to my vehicle while the other cars (Hyundia and a Honda Civic) were totaled. However I let someone borrow my first K-5 Blazer and they rearended a dumptruck therefore totaling the blazer... Shows that the bigger vehicle almost always wins!
