Any advice on what Yakima hitch bike rack works well on a Discovery II?

Spring for the extra and either get the Terragate or the roc n gate (I think that is the name). I have a Terragate on mine, the swinging gates are key given the way the rear door swings open.

unless you have a big reason to not put your bikes on the roof, put your bikes on the roof. having worked in a bike shop for a while, i can assure you some one will eventually tap into the bikes from behind and a lite tap on a bike will do major damage.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the disco is really tall. Think about having to heave your bikes up 6+ feet every time you want to go ride...

This is the same bike rack that LRNA offers at the dealerships. I bought a used one(LR) here on Discoweb a few months ago and I love it. Rigth after I bought the rack I found this one here but it just does not have the logo on it. The only problem is with full suspensions bikes. If you have one then you will need to get the seat to headset adapter so it will work on this rack.

Since I didn't leave it on, I opted for the non-swing-away Yakima rack... I really liked it. It's not convenient to get in the back door with it on, but it wasn't worth the extra $$ to me to get the swing away, since I took it off when I wasn't carrying the bikes.

Putting them on top wasn't an option: between the railroad underpasses and trees overhanging the backroads around here, I wouldn't have any bikes on top by the time I made it from my house to the highway, lol.... Plus, I needed four bikes, so the rear mount made more sense. Never had a problem w/ anyone tagging them with their bumper, either....

FWIW...

I bought the SuperROC model that carries 4 bikes. One thing to consider is that you will need a hitch extension with a Yakima rack. With the spare tire, the rack itself will not mount onto the receiver hitch. Had I known I would not have bought the Yakima, but I bought the rack thinking I wouldn't run into any problems.

When I mounted the hitch extension with the rack mounted on to it, I ran into swaying and bobbing problems. What a hassle, mind you I didn't have any problems with the rack itself. Yakima's QuickHitch feature mounts the rack solidly onto the hitch extension. I had to search around for a hitch stabilizer, but then I couldn't find one that would fit Land Rover vehicles. Fortunately I work for a company that has killer machine shop and the rest is history. Anyway the rack works great with a 12" hitch extension and I'm able to open the rear doors 3/4 of the way.

Disclaimer: maybe it's just a problem with the SuperROC model....I don't know. Oh and drive a Disco II

If anyone wants pictures of the setup, I can take some pix.

If you are carrying 2 bikes...get the SpareRoc. It bolts on to the spare tire, only costs $159, and it will not sway like a receiver hitch rack will. Any more than 2...put it on the roof. That is where mine is and all I do to get to them is open the door and stand on sill. I have an adventure rack as well, so sometimes I stand on it to put them up top(when with friends)

yeah, the disco is tall, but hell...you get an upper body workout too! i have an expedition rack (after having had yak and thule stuff on every car or truck since '84) and i adapted thule bars to it. i can carry 4 bikes and two kayaks at the same time plus my high lift and a smattering of other things. it takes some effort to get them up there, but i like my stuff away from traffic. also i can hang two more bikes, if needed, off the back of the rack so they hang up and down behind the car...if i need to get to a remote trailhead with low tree height.

just remember to buy light bikes.
