I am new to this board, and I would like a little info on the 99 Discovery.

Is this model prone to any malfunctions/service problems?
Is the gas mileage as bad as people say (13/16mpg)?!!
Does service cost alot?
Is there anything that I should be wary of when purchasing a 99?

Disco 1 or Series II? 1999 was a split year for the Discos.

13/16 mpg???!!! Holy crap!
I want one of those.

Seriously, Greg, I get about 10/13 in my 1995 Disco 1. I do have a lift, larger tires and a big aftermarket bumper (more weight). Even so, I never got 13/16 even when stock.

Must be a D2. Our D2 was much better on gas than our D1.

Service costs alot. But can you do it yourself? You bet. All Rovers have their own quirks, but what brand doesn't (FORD = F-ound O-n R-oad D-ead)? I can attest that buying a Rover gives you a whole new hobby, and working on them is genuinely fun. Never in my life had I felt that way about any vehicle. They are designed in such a way that any able-bodied individual can perform most maintanence and repair without crawling to the very expensive dealer service dept. I performed maintanence I'd never dreamed of before with no experience. About the poor mileage. You forgive it if you enjoy your Rover. They're made to be driven hard, and reward you if you do. I've met guys in a particular Balkan country that have over 400K miles on their Defenders and Discos, and the average town road there isn't different than driving rough offroad trails here. Rovers go and go.

The Disco that I am looking at is a 99 series II. Are there any major flaws with that model?

I am buying this truck after I turn my FORD lemon in, so I am already used to working on my car. At least this time I will enjoy it!

So what kind of gas mileage can I expect from a stock (for now) Series II?

thanks for all your help.

Other than the recall repairs, we had no problems with our '99 D2. We were getting 300 - 375 miles out of a tank of gas. The only issue I had with the '99 D2 was that I felt cramped in the drivers seat. '00 & '01 models were more forgiving for us "more robust" fellows.

I too have a 99 D2. It's got 38K miles, sees dirt trails about 70% of the time (we live in the mountains and our driveway is impassable by most cars when it rains hard). I was getting 400 miles per tank before my mods, now closer to 330. We've had the recall repairs and a broken radiator repaired under warranty, no other problems except the bumpers that I've broken. The diff breathers are not as good as the D1s but you can fix that if you plan on going to water.

If you're looking to buy, I had a great experience buying from a broker in Florida. They buy and ship around the country. I paid $18,835 (plus tax, tag title = $20,500) for a 1998 LSE with dual air, jump seats, Lighstone leather interior, etc. I have no ties to them, other than I was so pleased with them that I would be happy to recommend them. Email me @ [email protected] if you want their contact info.

Oh, by the way, the truck had 43k miles and still under the factory bump-to-bump warranty. The credit union valued the truck @ $26,800. So, I financed the actual cost, plus the cost of a new bump-to-bump warranty from LR, so now I am warranteed to 100,000 miles!

Guys,

I purchased a 99 D2 in September with 27K on it - now 30K. What recalls have been issued? I'm taking it to the dealer$hip next week for the 30K service. I want to ask them if they can make sure the recalls have been done.

Thanks,
