I had this convo over on Ex-Ex but got no good reply, so here goes again.... "While removing the center console on my 96DI I managed to make the "button" on the end of the parking brake not work. I had to undo the handle from the cable to get the console out, as told in the workshop manual. No spring or other little metal peices flew off that I could see. Now I cant get the button and the ratchet to engage on the stationary gear to lock the handle in the up position. What give? Anyone know how or what I need to do to get it to work again? Your help would be much appreciated." "The problem I have is that the connecting rod from the handle "button" to the "ratchet" that engages the stationary gear, acts like it is missing a spring. If I push in the button it wont pop back out like it is supposed to do. I've taken a good look at it and it doesn't seem to be binding on anything. I didn't hear or see any spring pop loose when I dismantled it from the brake cable originally, but I also wasn't really paying attention for that to happen." " I just got through tearing it all apart again, and no such luck on any "out-of-place" parts, except for the two small 1/2" cad plated screws with 3/8" washers. I think they are #6 screws or close to that. I know for a fact I didn't remove them, and they were found under the auto gear select when I removed it. I think I can factor them out, although it would be nice to know what they go to. There was an intriguing little bit of black plastic tubing. It's about 1-1/8" long, and has a slight bend in it. It is rather stiff tubing with about an 1/8" o.d. It was rolling around near the parking brake apparatus, but I can not decipher where it would go on or in the brake lever. I have a hard time believing it is my missing piece, but what do I know? Any thoghts would be much appreciated. As I said before the workshop manual is mute on this point. Does anyone have an exploded parts diagram of the parking brake lever they could post on this thread? Or it could be emailed to me if such a diagram exists. Thanks again for any forthcoming input" " .....bump...... Anyone? I almost got run over today by my Disco parked on a very, and I mean very slight rise. I need to get this fixed but do not want to be ripped off by the dealer installing a $150 spring or screw or something." |

Doesn't look like anyone has had this problem. You could try calling your dealer and ask them if there is a spring in the p brake lever. If you don't get a response from them try the parts finder at roverconnection.com or check with Kurt at http://www.rovercannibal.com/rover/ for a used lever. |

I will look it up tomorrow and post back. For the time being I would chock your wheel when you park. Ron |

Thanks for the tip. It looks like I need to go back down to my home town, Port Aransas, Tx, and steal some of those big wooden chocks they have on the end of ropes to chock the front cars on the ferry across the ship channel. |

Ok I looked in a couple books and no help. The only thing I can possibly think of is that the plastic tubing went inside the handle and acted to allow the button to pop in and out/lock. Can you pull up on the cable to get the T-brake to lock? You would have to remove the seat switch panel but it is worth a shot. Ron |
